  • Smoking the lights

Has anyone done this before, I was thinking of tinting my Taillights with some cleartint using my spray gun and was wondering if anyone has done it before. And if they had success with a certain brand or a liking.

Yes ive done it before, i used VHT nightshades.

I would not recommend tinting your taillights, not only is it illegal if you go dark enough, it just isn't safe, especially in the day time. I hated mine at the end

        Re: Smoking the lights

My tails are factory tinted, so I've never done it before. It can look good, just be careful if you do decide to do it - Make sure the lights are clearly visible from however far back... I can't remember what the law is. You can probably get away with a very light tint, but I honestly wouldn't do anything more.

I couldn't tell you how many times I've been following cars with tail lights tinted so dark that you couldn't see the brake lights... The only light you could see was the third brake light. Annoying as hell IMO

Yeah i found the law for BC, still searching for the alberta one. You need to be able to see the red tail light from 150m, which is hard to do with a blacked out taillight. If you did a light coat it wouldn't be too bad

            Tail lamps
4.15 (1) A motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer must be equipped with 2 tail lamps, mounted on the rear of the motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer, that are capable of displaying only red light visible from a distance of 150 m to the rear on both sides of the motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer at an angle of 45° from the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer.

That sounds like the best way to go about it to me, but then again I've never tried it myself.

I could be wrong, but 150m sounds familiar to me. That's probably a pretty safe number to work around

                    Also,

13(4) A tail lamp must be capable of emitting a red light that is visible from at least 150 metres to the rear.

So the BC law was relevant for the tail lights at least. Not sure about the brake lights though

I used VHT Nightshades on my first car back in 1994, but even then just did a light coating to reduce the red, never had any issues but never did it again either.

Pretty sure its also illegal to alter your headlights in any way. Even if it does produce a better light output, its no longer DOT approved. So talking about legal matter in this case is kind of pointless
