If you're looking for idea's. This guy did it to his TDI and did a similar setup.

He did a lot more work than I did, I just stuck a pipe down the engine bay... I don't think a smoothed out box will increase power because the pieces people smoothed out are actually designed to direct air into the intake manifold. I wish I got larger pipe like that TDI owner did but I'm happy with the $4 I spent. Haha

Laugh if you will, but this is what most 135/335s do for intakes, as its basically the same idea as the Dinan one.

                This.

I think rather than laughing at the guy, you should perhaps show him a bit of support for creativity.
This isn't Vortex, respect his choice to do what HE wants to HIS car & get over it.

I am just curious . what is it you are trying to achieve ....? not being a smart ass .. if it is high up power you will want a true cold air that has a long flowing smooth pipe . These can net you between 3-5 hp over an unmodified box and 2 tqs . Or a short ram under hood will find you 4ish tqs and only 2hp , but this would be on a modified engine with a chip and an exhaust . otherwise they both sound very cool . And the short ram will be safer for puddles . A modified air box wont find you any gains but does retain a stock look , and gives a bit of sound (the only true reason to have a vr is the intake sound imo).

Re: Brainstorm: DIY MK4 twin intake.

Far from a new idea? Modshack did a DIY double intake like 10 years ago, originally for the 1.8T Audi TT. It was so popular that he started to sell them.

But I think eventually testing revealed that a single intake with a wider diameter is better.

Hmm.. not sure I follow this logic.

                      N54/N55 is nothing like a VR6.

There is a reason why you don't see a dual cone intakes for the N52 variants. The N52 guys will simply delete the charcoal filter and add a drop-in filter or go the pricey route and upgrade to Stage 3 intake manifold. This is like saying, all the 135/335 guys upgrade to XYZ intercooler, so therefore it must work on a VR6.

But anyways, when I took the time to read his actual plans and saw his picture, it's nothing like the 135/335 dual cone intakes, which is what I thought he was doing at first.

Kujiwara, I'm not sure where you are attaching the hose, but just in case you need an idea:

Re: Brainstorm: DIY MK4 twin intake.

The hose just went straight down to the bottom of the car, tons of fresh air down there. I did the intake because in theory my intake works like the cold air intake except I split the intake into two. I thought it was fun to do so because it costed next to nothing, but surprisingly I did gain maybe just a few torques at the higher rpms at low speed.

This is kinda like what mighty car mods did in their cold air intake episode. I didn't get the KN because they busted the fact that performance filters gain power.

I think you'd be better off attaching it to the front grilles somehow. You want to achieve ram air effect and I cannot imagine you are achieving this as the air is flowing underneath then has to be sucked up at a 90 degree angle up to the air box.

Thanks for the advice, I'm afraid that routing the pipe to the driver side grille is almost impossible because the factory pipe is in the way, but I can probably get it to the vents in the lower valence.
I wasn't thinking about the ram intake in the first place, all I was thinking was to locate the intake pipe to a place where there's lots of cool air.

Get a Ferrari. They have 2 throttle bodies, and 2 intakes. Seems to go faster than a Jetta.
