  • Brainstorm: DIY MK4 twin intake.

First of all what does it mean as twin intake here, twin intake means you have two source of intake, so this means you get more air for your engine.

I am sure that MK4 owners know that our air intake system already has some sort of Cold air induction pipe, it goes behind the headlights but the air flow is very limited. This is why people say they get more power from aftermarket systems as well, it's not because the air is cooler is actually that they get more air, they get more air because the intake tubing is much thicker. So what I'm planning to do is to plug a secondary air intake pipe to the factory air box, most likely the bottom of the air box.

The advantage of this DIY twin intake is that it will never hydrolock unless you drive into bow river, because if one intake is blocked with water, the engine will suck air only from the other pipe as it has much less resistance. The second advantage is that you could possibly get more air flow than any aftermarket system. Last advantage is that is could be a very cheap mod. The only disadvantage I could think of is that it might look ugly...

I need suggestions on what pipe I should use, flexible pipes for gardening? And where I should position the intake pipe, maybe behind the bumper like the aftermarket systems?

You should just get a K&N panel filter for your airbox and do the swiss cheese mod to the lower portion of the box.

It's the Swiss cheese mod that inspired me but it will suck in very hot air from the VR motor.

How about a hood scoop on the driver's side like a 70's drag racer or us a NACA style duct

Yeah, except the air filter is in the air box, so basically two pipes attached to one filter.

That looks amazing, but I'm on a budget so I probably just cut the driver side lower bumper vents.

BPI velocity stack, more air than you ever need. IMHO one of the best intake systems out there. Cheap too

just run with no hood, great cooling for the VR motor and then you dont need to worry about having a "twintake" on your car as well, cheapest mod ever!!!!!!!
