  • Coilovers for summer?

The Itch strikes again! I know there are a lot of different sets of coilovers out there and, as evidenced by all the threads right now, with summer coming around many people are looking into getting into some new ones.

I was thinking maybe some people who run/ran coilovers can post what they run or have run and how they were.

Maybe by answering these questions there can be a fair comparison of what you get for your $. I know there's already threads like this on other sites, but I feel that each climate and road type really changes how a specific model will perform.

    Name/Model

    1 - How low?
    2 - The price?
    3 - Softer/Harsher ride than stock?
4 - Better handling than stock?
    5 - Are they durable?
    6 - Some other details?

I am personally wanting a set that goes a little lower than stock GLI, has a very soft ride, and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg (I'm asking for the moon I know).

    1. Will go really low with perches and helper spring removed (still has lots of thread left to play with in pictures)
    2. $399 usd
    3. results in a really harsh jaw rattling ride especially on potholes
    4. can hold 80kph on hwy roundabout merging lane
    5. been on since 2009 and going strong. the collars are seized due to the winters
    6. it's a really harsh ride but really cheap.

      Fk Silverlines

1 - can go pretty low
      2 - 1000-1100
3 - similar to stock but harsh in a good way nothi9ng crazy
4 - stiff and handled well
5 - seemed pretty durable had them for a season no issues.
6 - coated in SS, also can get the x line (dampening adjustable)

rears were all the way down with perches still in. front's still had a few threads left to go down as well and would have gone lower without perches too.

          Koni Adjustables

          1) Will go low with perches removed
          2) $1400 (shipping included)
          3) Dampening adjustable, I have it set to pretty stiff
          4) Much better handling than stock (however I had Euro stock rather than NA Stock on my .:R)
          5) Going onto my 3rd year with them, holding up great. Antiseize does wonders
          6) Did lots of research, and for the lowness I wanted and the ride I wanted, it was between this and FK Silverline X. I dont trust FK due to past experiences.

          Pic

Front has about 7 threads left to go, rear has the adjustment collar taken out, but the perch is still in.

P.S. I miss my seeing my cars opposite twinsy :( Sad panda

I came in here to post about Koni, so I will just +1 Pat's post haha.

They have 20% off right now on their website. You'll have to do a search to see if they have a coilover kit for your car though as I'm not 100% sure.

              H&R Street Performance

              1 - Retarded low.
              2 - $1400-1500
3 - Harsher but not to a point where it becomes annoying on long drives or anything. They occasionally feel a little bit bouncy at certain heights, but it's nothing I haven't been able to take care of with a minor adjustment.
4 - Better handling for sure
5 - I've had them on for almost a year now and they seem to be doing fine
6 - No complaints, although I'm starting to think that the adjustable dampending would be nice next time just to soften it up a little around town.

Not the best picture, but gets the idea across. Fronts have 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" of threads left... they will go low to a point where the car isn't driveable anymore. The rears have about 1/2 to 5/8" of threads left. The perches probably add about 3/4".

The picture is from about a week and a half ago. I still need to fine tune it to get it looking just the way I want.

                    FK Streetlines

1 - Quite low, picture below is with tons of threads remaining
                    2 - $600
                    3 - Bouncy/stiff
4 - Handled decently if the corner had not dips/bumps or else the rear end would bounce
5 - The coil rings get seized if you dont properly prep them
6 - DO NOT BUY THEM

                    Raised up for the winter:

I also have fk streetlines, I'll give a +1 to Sean except for the do not buy. In my oppinion they seem fine. My set have treated me pretty well so far. I have heared many stories of other sets being crappy so maybe I just lucked out.

                        Bilstein PSS9

1 - How low? very low, really nice stance in summer and could drop er even more, scraping oil pan and exhaust cover very easily haha
2 - The price? got em off TJ use for about $1000, new from 1399-1899 iirc
3 - Softer/Harsher ride than stock? way better than stock, a little stiffer but i have then at about medium dampening, way more solid when driving, not as bouncy, better at highway speeds, corners etc, that being said stock shocks were done when we pulled them off
4 - Better handling than stock? far better, very little roll while cornering, very solid
5 - Are they durable? seem to be so far, about 10,000 kms on em when i bought them, probably put on another 8-10,000 since installing
6 - Some other details? really like them, would recommend to anyone looking for a good quality coil with performance and nice drop in mind

I had FK streetlines on my MK4 as well. Perches seized, they rode pretty shitty unless they were cranked up to normal person height, probably wouldn't buy another set.

                            Solowerks S1
Comparing to GLI VR6 Sport suspension
                            1. Zero to three fingers between wheel and fender up front, broken finger to two finger in the rear.
                            2. $500
                            3. Can't really tell if its softer, but it is more comfortable, less bouncy and smoother than stock. Guessing its the damper has thicker oil.
                            4. Handles much better than stock, don't know if its still true when slammed, but I'm at 2 finger up front, 1.5 finger in the rear, the balance is great, handling is very tight, great fun to drive.
                            5. I only used mine for five months, but no rust at all after the harsh Calgarian winter.
                            6. Heavy Gold Zinc Plated Housings for superb corrosion resistance.
                            New Progressive elastomer bumpstops.

                            Front & Rear 35-55mm (1.4-2.2") Lowering Range
                            3 year Limited Warranty

                            But still...

#1 C1 coils 419-519 depending what kit you buy and there local
#2 ride way better then i thought harsher then stock but not bad not too bouncy
#3 go low have lots of adjustment still need sway bar and spacers to go lower
#4 handling better then stock i would say but went from stock with winters to coils and 18 so tire made big diff too
#5 put in last summer been my daily all winter so far no problems
#6 picked them up cuz they were cheap and got me low last summer but dont think ill change them unless its for air if you want to get an idea of the ride quality come drive my car
