  • Volkswagen MKVII GTI Released

Volkswagen has revealed the seventh generation of the Golf GTI ahead of its Geneva debut next week.

Following a concept showed last September, Volkswagen has published the first photos and details about the production-ready Golf VII GTI. At its heart is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 220 HP (162 kW) in the regular version and 230 HP (169 kW) in the GTI Performance variant. It is the first time when the Golf GTI is offered in two versions. Both of them have a peak torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft).

The regular GTI needs 6.5 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) on its way to a top speed of 153 mph (246 km/h), while the Performance model does 6.4 seconds to 62 mph and has a 155 mph (250 km/h) maximum speed.

Both of them feature a standard 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional dual clutch 6-speed automatic. With the manual, the cars have a fuel consumption of 6.0 liters / 100 km (39.2 mpg US or 47 mpg UK) and CO2 emissions of 139 g/km. With the automatic, fuel consumption stands at 6.4 liters (36.75 mpg US or 44.13 mpg UK) and 6.5 liters / 100 km (36.18 mpg US or 43.45 mpg UK), respectively. CO2 emissions are of 148 g/km and 150 g/km.

The GTI version of the Golf VII rides on 17-inch wheels with 225/45 tires and has a lowered sport chassis. It features a new body kit with a built-in rear diffuser and wider side sills. Inside it gets sports seats, steering wheel and pedals.

The standard Golf VII GTI has 314mm ventilated front discs and 300mm unventilated discs. The Performance variant has ventilated discs on all wheels, with 342mm discs at the front and 310mm at the back. The base version tips the scales at 1,351 kg (2,978 lbs).

Order books open up in early March in Germany, with prices starting from 28,350 EUR. The rest of Europe will get it beginning with May.

So they have gone back to 17" wheels as standard on the gti. Mk5/6(gti) came standard with 18" wheels, ya?

I feel the same way toward it as Pat does. Looking forward to seeing it in person for final judgement though.

MK5/6 GTIs had 17s as standard and 18s as options.

I need to see one in person. The front end has grown on me, but I still think the back end is ugly. The interior gets a big "meh" from me... some parts I like, some parts I don't.

The way the lights are shaped, it makes the trunk look wider than it should. That's why it looks disproportioned.

I wonder if NA model will get the two different engines or if we'll only get the 220 hp model.

And yeah, I agree with everyone else, the back is an eyesore.
