  • Engine ticks after oil change

just on the 8th, the past Friday I changed my oil since buying my 2001 1.8t. I used 5W-30 royal purple. Before I changed it I had no engine noise besides the normal running, and the swoosh and dumb of the the turbo and DV. Now I get a ticking noise once the car has warmed up and its only at idle that I can notice the tick. Is there anything I should look for or watch for? Should I have gone with a different brand of oil or gone with 10W-30? Any suggestions will help at this point.

Does the sound come from the bottom end or the top end of the engine. Did you buy the car of a private seller or dealership. If your luck is bad the person who sold it to you used oil thickeners to help hide wear and you changing the oil with using the propper oil it brought out hidden engine wear. A video of the noise would help

its at the top of the engine, and i bought it privately. the guy that had the car before left some of the receipts in the car and i took a look and its had a complete engine flush and pretty much a whole new coolant system, and the oil dipstick housing replaced. ill have to get that video tomorrow after school and ill make sure its easy to hear. And whats weird to me, is that shouldn't it do it at start up and half warmed up to? not fully warmed up to where its fully operating temp (90) on the gauge?

1.8t's are notorious for having valve ticking, it is probably something that you just did not notice until you changed your oil and now are a bit paranoid about it. Every 1.8t i have heard has a fairly distinctive ticking from the valves, not 100% sure what it is from but fully warmed up it seems to die down a bit, i would wear in the oil a bit and see if you notice anything settle down, but honestly an in person listen of another 1.8t engine would settle your fears right down i think.

My 1.8t sounds like a diesel. I've changed heads, gone big turbo etc and the sounds don't change.

you should have heard it before he had to change heads :P, but in all seriousness 1.8t's naturally tick i think everyone on this forum that owns or has owned a 1.8 will tell you the same thing.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned anything about using 5W40 oil instead of 5W30

^ true. I've also never heard of anyone in the Euro scene using Royal Purple either - ever. Only my domestic friends use that 'Merican stuff.

I ran 5W30 in my old engine for the entire time i owned the car (70,000km), zero issues and when Martin removed the valvecover, he said it was one of the cleanest engines he has seen. I had the exact same ticking noise as i currently do running 5W40.

1.8ts are quite noisy, both of mine are fairly quiet though. The biggest thing is to use the correct oil, these motors run hot that's why vw requires a 5w40. I'd start with some rotella t6, or motul in the correct weight

I'm sure the 1.8T absolutely HATES royal purple... it deserves better.

for sure ive never heard any good results with that stuff, over priced for nothing special. Another note is run the larger oil filter produced to combat the sludge on the passat/a4 models.

Hmm I didnt know that. I know absolutely nothing about oil, just that VW recommends 5W40. Figured that could be a potential reason. As for Royal Purple, i've actually heard alot of good things about it over on the .:R32 forums, but nobody really claimed it to be any better than Motul, Redline, Lubro-Moly, or the other big european oils.
