I've just always been told European Cars - European Oil. The dealership uses Castrol, so may as well use it. To each their own I guess, the opinions/arguments could go on and on...

Re: Engine ticks after oil change

I run 5w30 as well, Motul or Lubro-Moly. The ticking is pretty normal, search some videos of 1.8t's idling on youtube if you are concerned.

The 5w30 is prob thinning out to much once the engine is hot. The 5w40 is recommended while the 5w30 is optional

and pretty well any engine is going to tick to a point (if you listen real close)

Most Golf/Jettas can run the filter no problem, it's a little tight to get it in there, but much better.

Is this something the Golf/Jetta 1.8T guys are running as well? If so, what's the benefit - just curious.

Re: Engine ticks after oil change

I would imagine the larger filter = better filtering capabilities. Also can hold more of the so called "sludge".

Not so much of a benefit rather then a convenience, but the larger filter usually allows for an entire 5L jug to be used.

Yes the bigger filter is highly recommended , it allows close to an extra quart of oil. More oil equals lower oil temps etc.

Re: Engine ticks after oil change

sludge is not an issue to anyone running good oil at normal intervals ,,, the small filter is equally good at filtering out the metal but there really shouldn't be much to filter with again good oil also an extra additive (like what royal purple calls synerlube) is highly recommended

Re: Engine ticks after oil change

A larger filter would still have the same filtering efficiency, it just allows for the use of slightly more oil and a larger reservoir of oil to be used. I switched to running big oil filters and like it so far, still keep the same oil change intervals, however i feel a bit better if i run over my 5k change interval by a few hundred kms.

so thanks for all in the suggestions, but i know people people with a 1.8t and both of theirs dont tick. for that matter my cousins got a 1.8t and i have drove and been in his car and never heard the tick like mine. and the royal purple I've heard really nothing but good about till i was on this forum. just to state my brother has a r32 gtr skyline and he runs royal purple and it runs top. no ticks nothing with that oil in it. if its just the weight of the oil that's not a big deal ill just go pick some heavy weighted oil up and drain whats in it now and if its still ticking then i will have to get used to the tick. I appreciate all the replies and what you all recommend it was a great help.

please don't compare rice to german vehicles lol complete different vehicle/motor to try to compare the "ticking" noise to.
Like someone said, record a quick clip of the noise, upload it, and let some of the experts here further diagnose the issue for you.
I would do that before draining your oil & wasting more money. Like I said earlier, everyone has mixed emotions and opinions on what oil
they think is right, it was just simply stated that Royal Purple is not (or so it seems) popular for use with our cars.

I will be getting a video later today. I'll upload it and let everyone hear it. If there is nothing that they can figure out I will take the step of changing the oil. again and use a heavier weighted oil and get it to warm up to see if it ticks.

If it is your lifters causing noise you can pull them and test them and replace the ones that are sticking. But normally lifter noise is more at start up and then quites down as the oil heats up and thins.
