I pay $1200 a year so I think that it could be cheaper than a grand in other provinces. How old are most of you who pay over $1500?

some more sites to check out:

sounds like we all may be affected in one way or another...unless the policies are different in alberta.

has anyone tried talking to their insurance company yet?

                      Re: Insurance for modded vehicles...

I know for a fact that my insurance company would either not insure me or charge me much more if I asked them about this. So its a non-issue since I cannot afford to pay more and I don't want my insurance cancelled.

If there are consequences, well thats life. Same as the consequences that might come from messing around with my engine. There are three possibilities: Something catestrophic could happen, something minor could happen, or nothing could happen.

                        a) deny that fact that you have any form of modification
                        b) play ignorant and pretend you don't have a clue what they are talking about
                        c) be honest and tell them everything.
Ottawa-Vdubbing has a great post on this:

And relating to the above options,
                        a) once the insurance adjuster comes and sees your wreck (or any accident pictures) you're pretty much busted. And oh yes, they will take a damn good look at your car before paying up.
                        b) this is not a valid excuse. We've all been given our insurance policies in paper, so if you didn't read it (or all the nitty gritty details, or noticed how vague some comments can be) it's your own fault.
                        c) unfortunately, if you want to make sure you're covered by insurance, this is the way to go.

Currently, I haven't done c) yet. I'm not about to pay 2 x my premium and be lumped into the 'rejects' insurance pool just because I've got a chip and exhaust. My chip is visually undetectable (yay upsolute) and my exhaust, ...well... "my stock one rusted through so I changed it with something stainless". Plus, I've still got a cat so I'm not really worried. Yes, these are my excuses and ultimately it will be up to my insurance company wether or not they're valid. (unfortunately, nothing in my policy states what specifically is not allowable. Is my piperX flat-panel intake filter going to void my insurance policy? How about my tdi-midpipe? This lack of clarity is half of the problem!)

Should I be worried? Who knows. You'll never know until you get into an accident and rely on your insurance to bail you out. It's all about playing the odds...

Ah yes, someone to finally echo the words of my previous post...
Insurance adjusters and policies were made to make the insurance co's rich... and not to preserve the lives of all Canadian Volkswagens.

Damn... I really hate them now!

                            Re: Insurance for modded vehicles...

OK, for those in Calgary, I did a bit of research. I sent off an email to my insurance broker at Trillagy insurance. The company I'm insured under is ING, and I asked him questions regarding various modifications. Spring and shock kits (didn't ask about coil overs), sway bars, window tint, interior changes, and some body modifications were all OK'd by him for my car. His only suggestion was that once the mods were complete (like that ever really happens) that I may want to have my car appraised so that all the mods will be insured in the case of a serious accident or write off. If anyone wants more information, or my broker's name, send me a PM.
