Re: Insurance for modded vehicles...
I'm not 100% sure on this, but in the case that an accident occurs, if the insurance company is not aware of the modifications to the car, then the modifications will not be covered.
Now I'm not sure if they'd replace the modified parts with stock parts, or not replace any of the modified parts, or what...
I had a highly modified Land Cruiser for a while, which the insurance company knew was modified, and the insurance on it wasn't really high. Then again, it was a 25 year old POS.
Sorry, I guess that doesn't help at all...huh?

Re: Insurance for modded vehicles...
well, i would only worry about this if you're going to cause an accident which was your fault....
other than that, if you have all these mods, and someone plows into you, it's nobody's fucking business what you had on your car, the other insurance company HAS to restore your car to its previous state.2002 VW Golf GT TDI

This would sort of suggest that the reason your insurance company is asking you if you have mods is so they can put you into a different risk factor. i.e. so they can remove some of your insurance company's liability should you get into an accident or have an excuse to raise your premiums.Last edited by 1.8Trip; 02-12-2004, 06:52 PM.

Re: Insurance for modded vehicles...
i dunno, maybe. if you add 4 turbos to your car it doesnt mean that when you hit a bus, everyone on it will die....
its BS, sine you have money to spend on mods, you have money to give to them, THATS WHAT THEY'RE ASKING YOU IN A RE-PHRASED MANNER
i'm seriously considering getting a PO box in BC or SK, and having their insurance. i'm secondary right now, i dont have my own insurance, so its still ok, but imagine paying $500 a year....
i HATE the city of calgary, and insurance companies in AB. when the day comes, i will get the most out of both. i dont care. i pay high insurance, i will make the most use out of it. **** them. if i knew one day i was to crash or something, i would do it being remembered, like rolling the car many times, flip it, beyond recognition, at the same time, taking out a few city vehicles, road signs and hopefully a nice size bridge.... some day, once i get the deez up to 300!2002 VW Golf GT TDI

Basically, depending on the seriousness (ie. dollars involved) in the claim... the Insurance Company will do whatever it can in its power to deny your claim. If that means attacking your carbon fibre hood, your 2" drop... they will do it. Just imagine Montgomery Burns and his "7 wise men." The Insurance Co's don't make $100's of millions of dollars annually just by chance.

I thought this was a 90 zone" Calgary drivers. If the insurance company finds out... about your tint that is... they have grounds to deny your claim. (ie. If you hadn't of had the tint... you would have foreseen the accident and not made the turn.)

a) deny that fact that you have any form of modification
b) play ignorant and pretend you don't have a clue what they are talking about
c) be honest and tell them everything.
My guess is that most people would choose b) and a) just because c) sounds like a possible pain in the ass and could possibly get your wonderful rate changed. a) could possibly get you in trouble if there is record of you denying any modifcation and if you get into an at fault accident. b) gives you options to depending on the situation. That was the obvious answer, but is there any possible benefit to answering c)?

Re: Insurance for modded vehicles...
I pay 2400 for 2 vehicles (2003 Honda CRV and 2003 Jetta) plus my wife had been in an at fault accident within the last 6 years. So, it could be lower.

Re: Insurance for modded vehicles...
I pay about $1300 a year for my Jetta and I have one at fault acccident 6 years ago, however I am older too! Girls still pay less then boys, however it is starting to change as my sister is 20 has a spotless record and a 2002 Cavalier and she was quoted over $3,000 by most places.Blair

Re: Insurance for modded vehicles...
so right now we have a lot of speculations and questions...
quote from 1.8Trip "So is it better to:
a) deny that fact that you have any form of modification
b) play ignorant and pretend you don't have a clue what they are talking about
c) be honest and tell them everything."
so what i suggest doing is phoning your insurance company and anonymously request a quote, or make up a fake name, and tell them you are thinking of modifying your car in the future and ask them how that affects your insurance.
i will do this for my own insurance company and from meloche monnex (from which i got a quote and a very good rate from) and just plain ask them how aftermarket modifications affect my rate. and what constitutes aftermarket mods? and what if the mods make the car safer? or better yet, if i could get some form of policy that they have on aftermarket modifications and how it all factors in...that would be even better.Eric
