  • How low can you go?

I just ordered my suspension for my mk6, and I plan on completely dumping it if possible. I know a skid plate will be added eventually but I also hear if the sub frame is hit too hard, the airbags will go off and actually write off the car. Anyone have any experience with this? How hard you need to hit and where? How easy is it to trigger? Anyway to avoid it?

I'll take any precaution necessary, even sacrifice some height (but that's last resort)
    I take pictures for money.

Odds are that your car will be too low to steer properly before you have to worry about anything like that.

you are probly going to be spending 1500 or more for a good set of coils, might aswell save up for bags anyways.

After looking into bags initially when I bought the car, I was back and forth for so long and decided against them. Found good kits were too pricey, it's a daily driven car so I couldn't deal with any blown bags or maintenance issues. Something about always driving static is making me want to continue that way. For you guys with bags, do you find you run into issues often? Does our crappy climate make anything worse?

I appreciate the replies but this car will be static.

I know a lot of guys down in the states with bagged mk6's and they seem to constantly have issues. I would really love to have the option of hard parking it though...haha

I have had my car on bags for 3 summers now. I had a levelling sensor break on be (road debris), a compressor die (thats why I had two) and a leaky corner, but that's fixed. I got a steel tank with no drain initially but changed that once it was rusting, it was part of learning, now have an aluminum tank with a drain on the bottom. I went on an 8500km road trip this summer without any hesitation and the only problem I had was a result of me driving too low at night in a place i didn't know and bouncing my transmission off the ground on a dip, which loosened my drain plug and chipped paint on my door (lucky my airbag didn't go off..... people behind me got a hell of a show!).

I wouldn't hesitate to run my setup in the winter, but I don't want my car to be exposed to salt.

Do it right the first time and you'll never have a problem.

Re: How low can you go?

Air suspension is as reliable as the install, take your time and do it right and you will have very few problems. Look at tractor trailers they are on air and have been for a very long time. There is no reason to buy a nice car and then cheap out on suspension, maybe being an older guy I would rather be able to air up and not worry or drive low as **** it is nice to have the choice.

Re: How low can you go?

A good friend of mine has daily driven his imola 20th on bags for the last three years (Vancouver summer and winters) and has had very few issues. Like others have said, it comes down to the quality of the install as well as the quality of the parts you put into the car.

Thanks for all the replies! Man, coming from a place like vortex and other sites, this is a relief, actually feels like a nice sense of community. I appreciate all the answers! I worked at a shop here in town with an account with Ksport and got a very good deal on brand new Kontrol Pros recently. I will run those and see how tempted i am to bag it later on down the road, maybe for show. I do agree that when its a new car, it would be ideal to have the option to air up in certain situations and not beat the living crap out of a nice car. Also, dont want to sound like "this" guy but ive driven very low cars before and i have adapted that way of driving and even kept the habit with this car so i don't get caught slipping and smash into something.

Again, i really appreciate the time you guys are taking to answer and give advice! Maybe we will see this thing on bags one day. After doing more research on the wheels, sizes, offsets and rubber i plan on doing, it wont be running super low anyway. Just aggressive. Hope to meet some of you guys this year!

Ill keep this open for anyone who has heard of the issue in my original post or anything else along side with bags vs. coils.

We don't get winters in Vancouver haha. Couldn't agree more though.
