  • Cleaning Under the Hood

I'm wondering how people clean their engine bay? Can I just go to a wand-wash place, open up my hood and spray away? Will I wreck anything? I'm pretty sure it's ok cause I've done it before (not with this car), but I just want to make sure.

I'd like to hear from you to see what method you use.

I wouldnt use a high pressure spray without first covering the battery in a plastic bag or something, as well as the distributor.

I think the rest is pretty much water proof.

PS. for past major car shows, I've always got some wet rags and some rags soaked in windex and gone to town cleaning anything visible. Can take an hour to do a good job, but makes sure everything thats supposedy to be black, is shiny black and clean.

you can safely pressure wash the engine bay without any problems. you dont have to cover the battery or anything. i spray a little bit of (diluted) degreaser on the really dirty spots. just be careful of the little decals on the rad support, they will come off easily.

I'd be pretty f#$kn' scared if your car had a distributor, if I was you.

            2.0's have distributors, no?

I spray mine - and I took those stupid stickers off the rad - end of problem. Just don't get right up close.

i take my plastic engine cover off, i bought some really good engine degreaser, not that mine needs it, but still, soak the entire thing, and basically blast it with water like there's no tomorrow. i done it lots. all my stuff is stock, so i feel safe doing it....

remember, its only recommended doing this on a cold engine, otherwise it will crack in half and fall out the bottom, well not literally, but dont do it when its hot. then i replace the cover once everything is dry, and use that plastic vw shining stuff on all the plastic, looks better than new.
