I was just wondering who has what as far as intakes go, what are the benefits and disadvantages of each, I am still learning about all this car stuff. Correct me if im wrong but: CAI's provide the best gains at the risk of bringing water into the engine but this can be averted with a bypass valve? Short rams provide a safer mid range gain but i dont know any more then that as far as intakes go and what about a drop in K&N filter, how would the gains be with one of those? thanks in advance and hope this is a learning experience.

CAI's are great IMO for gains somepeople say there are non others say there are some. I think I gained with mine plus dynos agree so.. as for the water if you have a hella rainy climate aka vancouver or seattle then they are bad for sure but if its normal just dodge super huge puddles and you'll be fine.. water can only be sucked in if the filter is completely submerged in water so its gotta be pretty freakin deep. as for the bypass valve on FI cars you aren't supposed to use them because I've read it can get vacuum'd up and then sucked into the engine

I live in Eastern Penn like 5 minutes from trenton, lately its been awful out with the snow melting and the rain and such but still not that bad normally. where will the filter normally mount, how high off the ground is it and is there a difference between the companies or is it all pretty much the same

        Re: Intakes

they are all pretty much a filter on a stick.. there are brands with better reputations than others tho..
best bets are EVO, Carbonio, AEM and the new neuspeed is really nice too

as for height they sit behind the front lower vents so it depends on how low your car is..

        this looks cool

oh man that is gorgeous, but how is it with water? the last couple posts showed it mounted out the front grill which I would love but there didnt look like anything to stop water or debris from going in...

well the filter sits in that cylinder dealy.. so bugs, etc would get blocked and again for water its gonna be real deep to get any in.. trick with water and i've done it when i've seen big puddles that scared me.. toss car in neutral and shut off engine coast through turn car back on put in gear and gun it

                Re: Intakes

supposedly to suck enough water into the CAI that it causes damage, the puddle has to be 2 feet deep, and you have to be revving around 4000rpm.

I have the ATP CAI and i'm happy with it. no gains (in my opinion, no CAI's give gains). I got it because it was chrome and I enjoy chrome.

                  Re: Intakes

I just bought that euro-sport cool flo intake short pipe off of turbonium, with an ITG foam filter, and definetly noticed a bit of difference, and not too loud....I feel honestly that CAI provide little advantage on a car that cools the intake charge before entering the engine....plus the Turbo heats it up.....so semi warm underhood air was fine for me, and no worries about filter changing and such.....I found through research that the ITG filters are the way to go over cotton (like K&N..)....although, if you want a K&N drop in, I have one to get rid of....

                    Re: Intakes

I would estimate that there will be no measurable gain with a CAI also. Reasons to get one are looks, sound, plus more room in the engine bay.

The reason everyone says 'filter on a stick' is because there are no performance differences between CAI's. That being said, there are differences in how well they fit, what they are made out of, how easy they are to install and how they hold up to time, so keep those things in mind.

If you want real perfromance gains from an intake, you should track down this guy TTSchwing on Vortex, he has created what he calls the TTDA (Twin Tube Dynamic Airbox) that has real gains. His website is here:

                    http://public.fotki.com/ttschwing/cai_ttda_and_other

Edit: I didn't realize that Ryan beat me to this.

The next best thing is probably the Blue Rhino instake system since it replaces everything from the filter to the turbo. Not many people have this system but it is really the best pre-made commercial CAI.

Finally, for real performance a DIY airbox mod is a better solution than a CAI.

what exactly is it and how are the gains, plus where can I find it
