  • 18" Steel Wheels?

    Hey guys,
Was browsing around on VWvortex last night - came accross this guy who claims to have 18" steel wheels.
These look very similar to the OEM VW steelies (that come in 16"). Personally, IMO - those look like 17's to me...
Anyone ever seen these or have any leads on where to find them? Thanks.

I know some "spare wheels" are as big as a 20" steel, but only 5" wide, but that's a domestic. I'm not sure what European application would be for a large steel wheel.

definetly only looks like a 17". from what ive seen be very careful when going with 18" steel, most of the time the steel is really weak in that size, they bend really easy, more so than an 18" aluminum would.
      Current:
2017 VW Golf Sportwagen 4Motion DSG
      2013 VW Jetta 2.5
      Past:
      2005 VW JTI 1.8T
      1993 VW Jetta 2.0
      1996 VW GTI VR6

      1991 Ford F150 4X4

I would personally check spare wheels from tiguan/touareg/other mid to large size SUVs with a 5x100 bolt pattern (not sure if tig etc are 5x100 though). The steelies need to be large enough to clear bigger brakes that are on these heavy vehicles.

And yes they certianly do look like 17" unless the black facing of the steelies is quite decieving

Good to know, probably a horrible idea for these garbage Calgary roads.

              Re: 18" Steel Wheels?

Doing a little searching it seems that some of the R32s and TTs (perhaps other VAG cars) came with an 18" Spacesaver spare. The wheel would have been very narrow but possibly could be used to create bigger steelies when welded into wider barrels.

The mk4 R32s didn't come with spare tires i thought, they came with tire patch kits and a whole lot of styrofoam.

Have one of those hidden in the trunk, it's only slightly wider than a bike tire.

I'm pretty sure that all of the new VWs have switched to 5x112 except for the Touareg, which is a 5x130

.:R32's did not come with a spare tire, but you could fit the Audi TT spare in the trunk well. I'm not sure what size the steelies were, but I know they were definitely very narrow. Derek and Rob both purchased the spare wheel when they had their .:R32's......I went with the more important subwoofer setup

I would fill that space with a sub over a spare any day! Music is a priority, plus spares are over-rated... Just like headlight fluid.

Looks like you can get them for cars from the factory

I absolutely hate the style/design of the generic steel wheel - but love the VW/Audi style.
