I dunno about this, but I called germany to find out how much air bags are over there. They pointed out it's risky shipping it, or even having one anywhere besides on your wheel because it contains explosives. Apparently in germany it's considered that the moment you remove the airbag from the wheel, you're in possesion of an explosive device and may be in big trouble if caught. I dont think its like that anal here is it?

I don't think it is illegal to be in possesion of an airbag but not too sure. The mk3ers often remove both driver and passenger airbags from there cars!

airbags are a touchy thing. when i worked at acura back when i was in school if we took airbags off cars before we were allowed to send them back to acura canada for testing,etc we had to explode them..seriously 12v to them and thats it.. so we took a car battery and the airbag in question out to the parking lot and got back and juiced it.. suckers fly like 100ft into the air.. once we took a passenger side (big as you know) and put a 5ga bucket ontop of it.. blew it up. the bucket blew to smithereens and the bag went flying out of sight..

as for buying them i know if you order a 3 spoke bag if you swap steering wheels they will only ground ship them..

It is legal for the consumer to do it themselves.

I remember reading in either C&D or Automobile magazine, some old fart who was a proponent for airbags (not Ralph Nader), removes his airbags for the safety of his wife.

It is illegal for dealerships to remove airbags, unless the customer signs some sort of waiver paperwork
