  • Calgary + 235/35-19 = Broken Wheels/Tires?

Given Calgary's "sub-optimal" driving surfaces, thoughts/advice on running 235/35-19s? Is that enough sidewall for Calgary's "roads" or would I be better off sticking to an 18" wheel?

I'm running 215/35r19.... haven't taken them off yet. as for the ride, no ones ever complained but when you hit that pot hole your going to feel it. btw my front end feels like it has gained a significant amount of play since running these

I've never had any issues. Although I did bend a rays gram light wheel when I was running the 215/35. Calgary has remarkably good roads whether you believe it or not.

235/35/19 is standard 19" wheel, plenty of cars run them, no problems...

I'm assuming you're talking for the Golf R? I use 215/35R19 for my summer wheels. If you lower your car at all, the 235s would rub like crazy! Even my 215s rub whenever I hit any sort of significant bump, especially while cornering.

That all depends on the wheels offset though

Apparently I'm too tired to remember that haha. My wheels are 19x8.5 ET44, so I guess if the offset is higher then it should be fine. I remember Blair told me that the his BLQs (19x8.5 ET45) rubbed with 225s. I think rubbing is pretty much inevitable with 235s though, no matter what the offset is.

Anyhow, if this is for the Golf R, take a look through this thread if you need more info: http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29621

Yes 235 is too wide for sure, as Scott said I had 225s and being fairly low I did rub a fair bit up front and doing it again I would do 215s given width and offset options.

I run 255 35 19's on my allroad in Saskatoon and it's fine. And I can assure you our roads here are much much much worse than Calgary. When I'm in Calgary I feel like i'm driving on a silky cloud.

I run 215/35-19 in the summer. In the past 3 years I bent a wheel, but that was also mainly my own fault. Fine in general can be pretty bumpy though.

Is there much traction loss going to a 215 from a 225?

Or, going the other way, are 235s are ok if you stick with stock ride height?

                          Thanks!

It really comes down to the tire. When I was still using my stock wheels, I had 225 Continental ProContact all-seasons that would break loose if I even thought about accelerating somewhat quickly. My current summers are 215 Direzza DZ101 high performance all-seasons, and they can withstand a lot more abuse before they break loose.

As for the 235s, as far as I know nobody runs them on MK6s without pulled fenders and 9+ inch wide wheels. With a perfect wheel width and offset, you could MAYBE get away with them at stock height, but I bet you'd rub on any sort of significant bump.
