  • ABS +Traction Control Lights On

A week ago I had a flat tire on my rear right. Running 18inch tires. Before replacing the tire I had no lights, ABS worked, as well as the Traction Control. As soon as I replaced the flat tire with the spare (16inch) and started car, the ABS light came on. I took off and within 10 seconds of driving the traction control stops working and light stays on. I got my tire fixed and put it back on. Same problems happens with all 18inch tires.

I tried battery reset, fuse #9...

    Suggestions?

Usually this means you need a new maf. Maybe borrow one for a test.

I think I will take the wheel off and clean the speed sensor for the wheel that I had the flat on. Then if that doesn't work I will have to scan it. Unfortunately I do not have a tool so I will have to find someone with one or take it to TuneDub.

So I id a scan thanks to Rob, and the code is:
00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Rear Right (G44)
          003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent

That is the wheel that had the flat. Last night I took wheel off and cleaned the sensor. Will see if the light goes away I will unplug battery today. If not I am guessing the best thing to do is to replace the sensor? Anyone have a link to a guide on how to do it on a mk4 jetta?

It may take a bit for the code to clear. The spare is smaller so the speed sensor thought something was wrong and when it kept happening (driving on the spare) it thought the sensor was broke and disabled your ASR/ABS. Sensor is likely fine unless something hit it and messed it up when changing tires.

The sensors are protected and tucked in pretty close to the axle, tough to acidentially do anything to them unless you are digging into the CV Joint or suspension.

We cleared the all the codes, then when for a short drive and the wheel speed sensor was the first to come up.

I don't know how low you are but I bottomed out and the wiring for mine got snagged between the rear beam and body and it severed the cord which made my ABS light come on.
