  • Mkiv hub & bearing assembly

Does anyone have any insight on brand quality?? Vw wants 311.11 per hub assembly. With the lot of other things I have to do, I'm looking at ecs and mjm for the parts. Gonna ask natty what he has too. But as far as brands go, anyone have experience with FAG or KMM etc??

The winter list seems to keep on growing...

I think this is in regards to the rears?

    I have FAG and OEM.

From what my catalog is telling me it looks like FAG was the OEM supplier for this part. So in that case it makes the FAG bearing OES

I pulled my hub on my Jetta, brought it to a shop and they pressed in a new bearing for $60, it's not too expensive.

        Oh, rears? no idea.....

I did the rears myself a short while ago, it's actually really quick as long as you have a gear puller. The trick to the gear puller is to wrap a large elastic band around the prongs, like that it doesn't slip when you're installing it. I cut off the leftover brace with a dremel, took my time (maybe too much) but it came out good, cut a bit then hit it gently with a hammer, if it doesn't come apart, cut a bit more and repeat, at some point it will just snap in half. Good luck!

Yah, gonna try and get ahold of a gear puller on sunday, I was checking the vortex DIY a while back and it suggested the dremel as well. Is it really necessary? I don't have a dremel... Yet.

I think on the thread I read the dude just used the gear puller on the leftover race and it slid off (eventually). I remember reading something about the gear puller not having fine pointed teeth to grab onto the brace with, hence the dremel.

Re: Mkiv hub & bearing assembly

I used the gear puller to pull the race off when I did mine. Definately helps if you have a puller with a securing bar. The other tricky part is getting the new bearing on square. There is a special VW tool that threads onto the spindle with a flange to pull it on square. I used a block of wood and hammered it on until I could use the original nut to pull it the rest of the way.

The dremel was necessary and if you grab one from princess auto it's $25. I tried cutting a notch into the edge of the race to get it off with the gear puller but it didn't work well for me. Just think about the fact that the garage will charge you $75-$120 for one hour, then you can call the purchase of a dremel a minimum savings of $50-$80 just for this one time you will use it.

Good point, gonna hopefully do this tomorrow or Tuesday.
I'm sure I'll have heaps of other use from a dremel otherwise.

Cool, good luck with it. I've read that if you nick the axle stub while cutting the race off, it isn't the end of the world, and you can use 600 grit sandpaper to smooth it out. I found that if you take it slowly and keep checking how deep you've cut I didn't nick the race.
