  • Mk3 electric window problem

So I'm having trouble with my electric windows and a few other things it does or doesn't do. The wing mirror adjustment (maybe rear demister it is a problem as listed on a thread bellow but I think my switch could be the problem there the yellow light doesn't come on and the switch won't stay pressed in)

It some times works, it is a 3 door and both passenger and driver switches will work at the same time which happens for a brief moment rarely I generally don't leave them down but I try it ever now and then.

If I use the key in the door (twisting it and holding it in the open or close position it will open or close the windows every time)

I have (with help) taken off the door card and looked at the window regulator and all the switches and I'm pretty sure the problem isn't there again back to the fact that both sides work or don't work at the same time

There has been an aftermarket radio and speakers, different headlights fitted. There was a connection disconnected just under the steering column as you look up from the floor which seems to have made no difference to anything. I can take a picture of it if needed/

    I have come across a guide that lists the exact symptoms, it mentions earthing as a problem but doesn't go any further;

Anyone got any ideas should I take the fuse box out to see if there are any problems there? Do the windows need to be reset using Vagcom??

    Thanks

    Re: Mk3 electric window problem

I don't know about this exact issue. However on the MK3 there is a very common issue where the wires inside the door jam with break. Specifically in the black plastic boot.

^^ yup. Mine had a few cracks in that spot on several doors. Pain in ass.

Yes, as others have said, they are just a bit short so put a lot of strain on the wires. I've heard of people just cutting that section out and soldering new lengths of wire in. Not sure what the best solution is.

          Re: Mk3 electric window problem

I have taken a look there it seems to be a problem I've read on a few places. but no joy. I'm going to follow that connection back further. The earth seems to branch off separate and connect into a brown plastic circle that seems to have a few earths coming into it and joint to the a-pillar. That seems good but... Should I look at that whole connection going back to the fuse box?? Should I drop the fuse box. It seems like there is new tape put on in some places.

              Re: Mk3 electric window problem

the flex point on the wire harness is the usual suspect. the wire can be broken inside the insulation, which makes a visual check difficult. Pretty much have to check with meter before and after, unless you can feel the weak spot in the wire. I think three of the four doors in my mk3 has one issue or another with windows, locks, speaker cutting out. The only one that never messed up was the driver's door and that is because the previous owner had the whole harness replaced.

Yea, if you think you can just look in the boot for physically detached wires I have some bad news for you unfortunately. As Stefan said, need to meter them out or just cut the whole section out and lengthen it.

                  Re: Mk3 electric window problem

Ok so I haven't done anything lately but decided to have another go at it today. I got a second door loom and tried that with no difference. I've checked the door looms they both seem fully enac.t I think it is something to do it with the loom inside the car something cut damaged or disconnected. Any suggests aside from the usual door problem.

Will A VAGCOM scan identify any problem that could be related to this??

                    Re: Mk3 electric window problem

So I've stripped out the dash and got access to the fuse box it doesn't pull down enough to see it from behind. I have found a few loose connections but I don't know if they are supposed to be for the installation of things such as cruse control with the connections included in the loom. I'm at the point where I need some help.

I am looking for someone who is very familiar with vw wiring looms and can prove it (mechanic or show work done previously conversions etc.) who can fix the problem and teach me at the same time. If anyone could recommend someone or PM me if your interested and I can talk about a time and rate/price.

                    Thanks
