  • VW Extended Warranty

Worth buying at the time of purchase? Thoughts?

Also, if the dealership is offering said extended warranty, is it limited to that dealership or can it apply to all VW dealerships?

    Cheers!

    Re: VW Extended Warranty

I bought my last two cars certified pre owned, basically where warranty would have been over but got cpo warranty. I guess this would be comparable to extended warranty.... In which case, I used it a lot. Over 5000$ on one car and over 10k$ on other. I have never bought a new car but would consider extended warranty because of these experiences. Then again, if the cars had been mine from New, maybe the cars would not have had the issues, so hard to say.....

Bought an extended warranty from Coast to Coast on my Mazda6. Never used it for repairs but it was useful to have when the car had a battery issue and they paid for the towing, etc... Basically I could have just gone with AMA for a lot less, then again I only had the car for 4 years.

I plan to keep the car for a long time and judging from what I've seen, extended warranty is a must for VW electrics.

I just need to know what's actually covered in said extended warranty.

If its coast to coast don't bother, they require oil changes every 3 months or 5k km regardless of manufacturer requirements, and must be done at a mechanic with sign off on a tag you send in every time or they will deny warranty.

You can purchase extended auto warranty on a brand new vehicle through some Insurance companies. I know we offer it at AMA but I'm not sure the exact details. That might be something to look into as well.

                    Re: VW Extended Warranty

I would be very careful before buying an extended warranty. I looked into it after buying a used CPO VW from a VW dealer, and decided not to go with it. First of all the warranty is a third party product, not a VW warranty. If you want to claim, the dealer has to phone the company and get the repairs authorized. When they're trying to sell it to you they'll say it's not a big deal. Secondly, read up on what is covered. You'll find a lot of things are excluded. Sure, if you have some catastrophic drive train failure, you'll probably get covered, but lots of the things that really go wrong are excluded. Pay attention to what are considered wear and tear items. Remember, it's a huge moneymaker for the dealer, they want to prey on your insecurity, and I'd bet 90% of purchasers never use it. Just take that $1,000 or whatever and put it in a jar. You'll have it if you need a repair, and if you don't you're money ahead.

P.S. Not sure if you're buying new or used. But the CPO warranty that comes with certain used VWs is a VW warranty and is included in your price. It is one great deal. If you're buying a recent used car, it is actually better than the new warranty because it extends said warranty longer than if you were the original owner. Do not confuse it with the third party extended warranty.

Buying new. I will definitely read the terms/conditions because I am planning to do some mods with my Golf R.

                        Re: VW Extended Warranty

I got my wifes Jeep used and they threw in the warranty at the last minute and I just rolled with it because I figured it was good protection. The next day when I showed up to get an issue that they said they had fixed redone they had me sign the warranty papers. I of course was in a hurry and didn't read them fully till about an hour later, and yeah couldn't do my own oil changes and had to have a repair shop to do everything. I cancelled it right away, but of course it took 3 months to get any money back from the dealer that sold me the jeep.

Just read all the terms and understand what you have to do to keep the warranty and what they will pay for.

I would consider putting the amount you are going to pay for the extended warranty in a 3-4 year GIC and see what happens as you should not need if for a while with the standard warranty and see where you come out after, you also usually can buy it at a later point in time so maybe see how the car goes before you pull the trigger.

What's the main differences between CPO warranty and extended warranty?

If they are similar, I wouldn't bother with it. I have CPO warranty on my car and I've been thinking of refunding it for a prorated amount.
