    Hey Guys,
Im James, a calgary guy who mike (merdenoms) got addicted to volkswagen. I've been lookin into picking up a mk4 jetta. From reading the vortex and nvd forum's I know this one's been beaten into the ground, but every situation is different right?

1.8t (2002+) or vr6 - My intentions are to have this car as a daily driver. I could care less about my 1/4mile times, but I want to have a "fast" car. Im looking at spending around 30g's so if I go with the 1.8, Id have a bit of money to throw back into the car right off the get-go. I've been pricing out jettas for a little while and have test drivin both already but still can't make up my mind as to wether I want the 6 or the 4 as I didn't see much of a power difference for. Its hard to have an impartial view seeing as I've driven Mike's car and obviously the car I buy will be alot different, in the beginning at least

I do plan on modding the car but nothing unusual. Oh yeah, and if anyone is lookin for a 2000 Jeep Cherokee - lemme know.

    Cheers!

    Welcome to the boards James!!!

This choice is a personal choice and not an easy one to make, but given what you said I think I would suggest turbo with a chip!!

      Welcome!

I think you should consider the new 2004 Jetta GLI that is about to come out. It is a limited edition that has numerous upgrades already (sort of like my 20th Anniversary GTI). You can read about it here:

Unless you plan on spending a ton of money for a VR6 upgrade the only bolt ons you can really do are I/H/E. 1.8T will give the best bang for buck performance mod wise with the usual I/H/E, chip....

if you want to spend more get the 04 GLI otherwise right now try to get the 03 GLI or GLS 1.8T simply because the 03 GLI is the last year of the 24V VR6 and also it nor the GLS 1.8T have the dumb chrome trim not to mention they'll be cheaper than an 04 so i would try to get one of them.. go to northland and see kevin or dick bradley and tell them ryan with a silver jetta sent you

            Re: New Dubber

So far so good, and thanks for the hookup Ryan, but I've met with George at NL vw already (when I went testdrivin with merdenoms) so I'll proally buy through him.

Im pretty partial to the 2003GLI but they are pretty pricey and I have to make this a cash deal 'cuz im goin back to school in september and wont have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. Which, clearly, puts the 2k4 gli out of my range.

One reason I am heasitant to go with the 1.8t has, from what I understand, a really sloppy suspension unless you get the sports suspension and it's gonna be a pain in the ass to find a used car in a color I like with the options I like. With the GLI, I just have to like the color and im all set.

Out of curiosity, What would you guys expect to pay for a '02/'03 1.8t gls with 40k km's or less, fully loaded? I see northland has some 03 gli's for between 27 and 31, just wanted to compare.

honestly VWs hold resale quite well so I would try to shoot for a new one.. After every possible option in my 03 GLS 1.8T i paid 32500 after GST which was a good deal IMO to what the sticker said.
GLI is awesome for these features - seats (mikes make me want to cry when i see them)
steering wheel - 3 spoke blinger
wheels - montes are nicer than LBs but both are nice OEM wheels i spose

Welcome! I also say that it is a personal choice. My choice was obviously a 1.8T, your choice may differ. Both are good. There seems to be more aftermarket parts (at least within the grasp of most owner's pocketbooks)available for the 1.8T.

Don't forget to say you got a reference from somebody. They give the referencer a check for 50 or a 100 bucks. And if you've just graduated they give you an additional 500 bucks (i think it was 500 - they give a good amount tho) off.

                            Re: New Dubber

                            Welcome!

I think that you should test drive both cars. Once you have driven the cars, you will know what you prefer. The feeling of a turbocharged car is different, some people love it and some people don't.

All Mk4 VW's have kind of second-rate suspensions in my opinion (the 20th av being the best of the bunch). The 1.8T engine weighs much less and so obviously it handles different. You can always go aftermarket, or just add a rear sway bar for a noticable improvement.

As for price... personally I would look for a private sale on a very well maintained car. You will save 4 or 5 thousand (or more) dollars on the same car. You can use this savings as mod money, or just put it into the bank as your own "warranty fund". My second choice would be to go with a down payment on a new car.

Ya, definetly test drive both cars...which I think by the sounds of it you have. I love my 24v and I don't have any complaints...sometimes I wouldn't mind having a turbo for shits n giggles, but the VR6 is a great motor. 03 GLI's are nice, and if you see one with everything that you want in the color you want then you should go for that one and not some used 1.8t with the stuff you dont necessarily like...you will be dissapointed in the long run. Good luck on the purchasing of yer dub.

LOL Ryan i was joking...I am just suprised you forgot about my hoopty
