  • Blowing Fuses

    Hey Guys,
Having some issues with blowing 20amp fuses for my front window wiper. Started today when I tried to spray the window with windshield fluid to clean.

Pulled the fuse in #24 and noticed it was blown so I replaced it with a new fuse. If I only turn on the wiper, its fine but as soon as I try to spray the windshield fluid, the fuse blows immediately. I have tested this tonight.

I have also blown my back window wiper fuse in the past. Turn the back wiper on and it won’t stop. Haven’t had a fuse in #27 (back wiper) in now for a few months.

Any idea why I keep blowing fuses and what can be done to fix this?

    Thanks!!

The rear wiper in the golfs are prone to failing and leaking inside the hatch. It definately causes rust. Any chance it could cause the motor to short?

No, I really dont think that could be. I have zero rust on my hatch nor do I get any water inside. Its a good idea but I dont see that being the cause of the problem.

Your fluid pump could be on its last legs and be dead internally.

          For the rear pump/wiper issue:

          - pull back the rubber boot on the hatch (the flexible accordian style piece), under one side you will find the wiring for the rear wiper stuff, and the other has rear high brake light wiring. You will likely find this wiring to be broken, dried out, and worn through. This is probably the case on both sides, even if a problem hasn't reared it's head yet with the brake light.

          For the front pump/wiper issue:

          - unplug the front washer pump, replace the fuse, pull the wiper switch. If everything is fine, and the fuse holds but nothing sprays, the problem is most likely the pump itself. If the fuse blows, it is time to break out a multi meter and start tracing the power wire out for ground faults. I'm betting it's the pump.

^ what he said. Also I haven't come across a mk4 gold where the rear wiper spray portion hasn't failed yet.
Try using your key int he rear lock, if it works you are likely ok. If not pull it apart and inspect the spray tube of the motor. Actually even if is is fine I would take the motor apart and clean up the spray tube.
The problem being that the arm control rotates around a thin brass tube that sprays the fluid. In time gunk builds up in there, breaks the tube and fluid leaks out all over the inside of the rear hatch.

So we got around to replacing the pump (thanks Sean for the help) and its still blowing fuses when I try to spray the front window washer fluid.

Any ideas from here on what I can check next to figure this out? Thanks!
