First post here guys, long time TDICLUB member...

Just wondering if anyone has timing belt tools for a 2003 Jetta TDI (ALH) that they would be willing to rent/loan to me.. I have to do struts and bushings etc., so may as well get this all out of the way at once... Thanks in advance!

    Re: TDI Tming Belt Tools

Alright im gonna save you some cash.
For getting the cam gear off, i used a hammer handle and lubed up a sizable piece of 3/4 heater hose over it and laid it on the top of the head and through one of the windows in the cam gear. then just use a breaker bar to give it a quick jerk to knock it loose.

To release tension on the timing belt tensioner, head to Triad fasteners on 35th ave and pick up a 5x55m bolt and a suitable washer and bolt to allow you to get the belt on again.

remove the left engine mount to get access to the timing side, and slide your jack under the oil pan with a block of wood and raise and lower it (not too much) to get to the two 17mm bolts.

as for the rest of it, just make sure your at TDC when you put the belt on, give the crankshaft a good couple turns slowly to make sure your not hitting valves, and if you arent then your good to go

    hope this helps

Or just rent or buy the tools and have some peace of mind knowing you're not trying to "mickey-mouse" it.

why would you go through the hassle of renting VAG tools, when you can either buy a cam holder from princess auto or improvise. Hardly mickey mousing it.

Thanks for the advice... I've been very tempted to just pull it apart and 'jimmy' up some solutions, but I've been thinking it just might not be worth the money saved over buying/renting the tools...I haven't done a TB on one of these before so would rather be safe than sorry. I'd love if someone already had them and would be willing to rent them to me...

i dont think theres many people that have them, and once again if you get tired of waiting, spin the cam gear so its at tdc, take off the valve cover and mark the position of the cam lobe on cylinder 1 to the cam cap. that way you have three reference points to tdc.

                    Re: TDI Tming Belt Tools

there are several sets of timing tools on here. With any luck, someone will chime in that is willing to rent them out. If you are going to have to go get bolts and heater hose for the homebrew method anyways, you might as well just borrow/rent the timing tools.

I have the strut wrench, allen keys and spreader available if you need for the suspension.

                          Re: TDI Tming Belt Tools

So have you ever done a timing belt?

I have done many and have the tools, just don't know how accessible they are right now due to me being in the middle of a move. I will look tomorrow, if I can see it in the back of the truck I will pull them out. I can't promise anything right now, but I do have a set.

TimTurrx's advice would work fine on a 1.8t or a 2 slow, but a TDi is a different beast. The fuel pump makes this job more difficult and requires more tools as well. Cam lock and the fuel pump pin are also required and highly recommended. I have seen to many horror stories on the mark and pray method, its your engine, your choice.

I have done many timing belts on TDi's and never had any problems with the proper tools. Give yourself a good day for doing the job, its not a job you want to rush through and screw stuff up. Where did you get your kit and what was all included? Just making sure you have everything before you start, job always goes better that way.

^ What Ben said, he helped me to mine and having the right tools makes it a ton easier and you will have more piece of mind that you did it right.
