  • Need opinions on Jetta 2003 1.8T problem

Yesterday I noticed that when I am in 3rd gear and above, when accelerating above 3000 RPM, my RPM shoots up fast to around 4500RPM but the speed of the car does not respond accordingly. After a brief second, the RPM adjusts back to ~3000 and continues to climb normally as I speed up. My first thought was to clean the MAF, and so I did. Just now I test drove the car and it does the same thing + it smells like burning under the hood. (Should not be from the MAF cleaning process as it had a slight smell yesterday that I overlooked).

Any ideas? Any more info I could supply? I am pretty worried as we speak.

Clutch is slipping if its a manual.

Torque converter is going if its a auto.

it is manual. The clutch doesn't seem to be stiff or any changes? This cannot be good...

Just went and started the car in all gears and it stalled every time. There is no Check engine light on either.

Also could it be the Tranny? That would kill me and my savings.

It's the clutch. Put the parking brake on and start the car going in first gear. You should stall as the parking brake is stopping you, often a worn clutch will slipand you wont stall when doing this test. Obviously don't try to start moving from idle, give it some gas like a normal takeoff. Also drive around a bit and heat the clutch up before doing this test.

It's defantly the clutch , usually the rpm spike happens in higher gears due to the clutch not being able to handle the load
. If you getting a shop to do it make sure it's somewhere that knows these cars since there's lots of stretch bolts and other items that cannot be over looked

Where should I get it done and how much do you think. Geo says around 1000. Any other people with previous experiences?

1k is the going price, you can do it yourself for less if you are mechnically inclined. It's not a ard jobto do, but it does require some tools and know how.

What could the burning smell attribute to? Hopefully the transmission is fine.

The friction material of the clutch is burning up because it is slipping.

The burning smell is the clutch plate spinning "slipping" against the springs in the clutch, as there is not enough pressure left to hold it under load. How many kms on your car? And any HP mods?
