  • Blue Heat from Webasto

Further to Gaffer's post on the heating system, I did a search and found this:

    http://www.webasto.us/am/en/am_auto_heaters.html

Apparently there are two dealers in Calgary:
Jack Carter Chev Olds on Macleod Trail &
Eskimo Refrigeration on 4705 SE 61 Ave

Man, the more I look, the more I see that these guys are THE guys. These guys seem to have the market cornered for sunroofs, heater systems and heated seats.

He shoots, he scores. Nice work on the hook up 1.8Trip. I wonder why these things have not really caught on? Maybe its the price. Too bad they dont have the OEM one with the VW key fob like Hillside has posted on Vortex.

Did you call either Jack Carter or Eskimo about the price? Damn I wish my nephew was still working in the parts dept @Jack Carter.

Hrm the problem is you need to plug it in right? Great for when I'm at work but useless when I'm parked in the street at friends houses etc. Still - might be better to get than a new block heater - I have nothing right now :(

There is no plugging in with this thing. It's kinda like a little furnace to heat your coolant and circulate it. More like a car starter without actually starting the car. The advantage is, when you do start your car, there is no metal to metal harshness b/c the engine is already supposed to be warm.

From my understanding, there is no pluggin in needed. The install of the system requires a tap into the fuel system. It is like the old gas heaters used in the early VW's, except this one is able to circulate & heat up coolant fluid, and I think it had the ability to turn on the HVAC fan to heat up the car interior.

Well, I called Eskimo Refrig. and they told me $2G installed. A little too pricey for me. Oh well, I still like the idea. Maybe the MkV will have it as an option.

Yah, 2g is just a little but high if you ask me. I will have to opt to put the 2G toward building a garage. Maybe the hillside one will be a little more reasonable once they get it?

                Oh well.

Hillside said in the region of 750-900 US hopefully closer to the 750 mark. They're still not 100% sure it will work on north american cars yet. They're getting one and trying it out next week.

Sounds sweet and I would enjoy one on days like these, but I don't know if I can justify $1000 for it.
                  huh?

Blah 2 Grand? Compustar installed is only 700ish and that has start on demand. Ah well maybe it will get cheaper over time.

So its just a very small gas-powered engine that pumps and heats your coolant? And it is started remotely? I wonder if a person could install it themselves...
