  • Need help replacing front wheel bearings. Beer included ;)

Anyone done this before on a MK4??? Just need someone to sit around with a beer in their hand and show me what to do. Planning to do it this saturday. Also if you have the special tools, it would help tremendously. Let me know if you feel like drinkin some free beer

    Thanks in advance

Thanks for the link. I usually go off of those DIY links, but with my luck something always goes sideways a bit so its good to have another brain there thinking of solutions haha

Probably not....I have this kit which we are going to use: http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-...ain/ES1306825/

Simply tighten them out and then tighten new ones in

How are you suppose to pull off the hub with that tool? You will still need a slide hammer with that tool by the looks of things, unless you are replacing the abs sensor as well.

I was hoping to be able to use a gear puller. The races can be broken apart on the bearing correct, unless a slide hammer would be easier?

Seeing as i've never done this before, anybody have a slide hammer they would be willing to lend for a day?

oh a slide hammer makes this thing a 30 minute job if you know what to do. There is a way though.

find a bolt that fits over the inner race, BUT NOT THE OUTER RACE PLATE and then smack it down to get the inner bearing out.
Then take an angle dye grinder and score the race thats still attached to the hub, and score it deep enough so you can smack the old race with a chisel or straight pry bar, crack it then slide her off.
This can be dangerous cause if you cut too deep and score the hub too much your gonna have to replace the whole assembly.

If i get my car put together by the weekend i could possibly come help!

oh and as for the slide hammer, check with napa or another parts store to see if you can rent one for the day. They usually just charge you the price of the tool then pay you the full amount back when you return it.

Also another way is to head to home depot or something and find a suitable pipe that will fit over the hub, and fits the diameter of the old bearing then just smack her out. Installation will be a bit more difficult cause you dont want to damage it though

If I'm not working saturday, mind if I come by and help? Won't be TOO much of a help, but I love to learn how to do this type of stuff!

I did mine, didn't take too long but I pulled the knuckle. We have a bearing press at work though so I took it in and did it after work. Never tried the slide hammer but I assume it works well!

I have to work Saturday also, or else I would lend a hand. It is fairly straight forward if you are removing the knuckle, if not a gear puller would help.
