Just remember Optimas are CRAZY heavy, I lifted one at A/C I couldn't believe it. Weight was a consideration for me 'cause I was gonna put a battery in the 'rado. I wonder how a gel cell would do in the cold? My motomaster 72 is doing just fine the the 'rocco though, can't complain.

I dunno but sounds like a damn awesome thing, I send an email asking how much they are. Especially on days like today these things would be sweet.

SWEET!!! I too, want one of these. I'd have a tough time shelling out the thousand bucks, but at this point, I would do it.

Re: How can you tell if you Block Heater is working?

so i left my car plugged in all night in my garage, i didnt notice it starting any better then it normally does, i didnt hear a hissing sound coming from my engine, does that mean it just wasnt working?

i forget what the tdi's have, they might have block heater, i'm guessing thats a bolt or something that goes through the block which actually emits heat?

Bart your car will have a little pad that looks like it is glued onto the oil pan with a cable comming out. No block heater jsut an oil ban heater. I would recommend to everyone to save themselves $1000+ and just go buy a zerostat coolant heater and do this install Linky. I know I am going to get this done hopefully this weekend, a long drive to work in a cold car sucks!

The only way I've found to know if your oil pan heater is working, is laying on the ground and putting your hand near it. It gets pretty hot, so don't burn yourself. With using the heater I haven't noticed my car starting any better or warming up any faster...

                        Man it's cold out there.

I'm gonna look into the mod stonewall posted, that looks good enough for me, and I'll put one in my GF's car right away aswell......Have you looked to see where that exact thing is available?? I have never seen it in a store! And of course my car wouldn't start this morning, but my GF's '86 carburated civic with a MANUAL choke and NO block heater started great......there is no mercy.....

So far I have heard that maybe canadian tire caries them. Lots of people on the TDIclub website swear by them. I will have a look for one this weekend and post where I find it.

Nothing short of starting your car on fire an hour before you try to start it will give you warm air in this weather It is pretty hard to keep an engine at +20 when it is -30 outside so therefor the engine will not be warm enough to emit any type of heat. As for how block heaters work it is just an heat element that usually goes in the back of the engine where a frost plug would go on older cars. I don't believe most new cars have frost plugs to stick a block heater but I cann't be sure.
