  • Steering issues.

Hey guys, recently when I've been driving I've been hearing this rickety noise when I turn my wheel, the steering is still smoothe, and I cannot hear anything when I am outside the car. The weird noise is not coming from anywhere near the wheels either. it almost sounds like its coming from the steering column but I'm not entirely sure. *Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Any help is greatly appreciated.*

strut bearings, control arm bushings, or possibly the stearing colum.

Just for information purposes after talking to Danny, "somebody" used an impact wrench to crank down the nut right above the thrust bearing on his suspension, hence i strongly believe that his bearing is cracked and needs to be replaced. Easy enough to change out too, undo upper strut cap with car on the ground and remove, undo nut holding bearing secure, jack up side of car, take old bearing out and replace, jack control arm up into place so you can tighten BY HAND THIS TIME the upper nut that keeps the bearing in place, then install upper strut cap again and repeat for other side

Dan, I have an extra bearing in my garage. You can have it but I am leaving for vacation on Tuesday so you need to come get it before then.

dan, when jay and i were tightening that thing he had a 12v impact gun which would not have hurt that because jay did his with it and i did mine. plus it was only option seeing as how we didnt have the right tool.
            I'm bay curious.

A 12V impact gun is strong enough to crush a bearing, I have used a socket, hex key a pair of vice grips to turb the socket in the past.

I have the correct tool if you need to borrow it. It is possible you put it on upside down too.

Also have the correct wrench and hex sockets. Only a block away from Stonewall though, so really 6 of one....

                    Re: Steering issues.

did this with mine also...no issues. the 12v impact does not have enough jam to crack a bearing IMO unless you're an idiot and you stand over it hammering for 30 seconds. Sean its ok to name names I have no issues with how I helped Danny. After researching the install for myself I found a lot of guys zing the top nuts on with impact, and they use air...I let off the trigger as soon as I heard the gun "impacting".

Eric, if the two people that helped Danny (both of whom have very little experience with suspension installation might i add) incorrectly torqued bearings on their own cars that does not make it the correct way to do things. Take it from a person who has swapped out countless sets of coilovers/springs/air struts. The only option you have was an incorrect option, so why did you do it in the first place? Many people have the correct tools from VW to do this, and even if you dont there are always people willing to lend them out (see this thread for example). And even if you dont have the correct VW tool to do it you can still effectively get it done with regular tools you have lying around your garage at home, a 13/16" spark plug socket, 22mm box end wrench, T50 torx bit or equivilent allan bolt that fits in a bit holder, 1/4" ratchet and 1/4" extension.

That works too, and i very much agree that a 12V impact has enough torque easily. Some have torque ranges up to 250lb/ft where as the torque spec is only 44lb/ft

I did not want to get into a pissing match by naming names, that is why i kept names out of this and simply stated what the problem was and how to fix it and WHY it occured. But since you turned it into this i am going to stick up for my points here as best as i can. Your opinion that a 12V does not have enough force to crack a bearing is one that is incorrect. The FACTS are that it does have enough torque to EASILY crack a bearing. Also as much as researching helps you, it does not make you extremely knowledgeable about the installation. Doing this many times and screwing it up yourself is what teaches you the limits of what these bearings can take and let me tell you, it isn't very much...

honestly.... I'm thinking this could be a possibility haha........ I'm a complete idiot when i comes to the mechanical parts of a car. time to do some research haha

as for this^ there might only be the one side that has cracked, ill have to take a look at it. jay did the passenger side, and eric and i did the driver's side because jay had to take off that day.

Anywho, if you do find that is the problem and want to borrow the right tools you are welcome too. I only do those top bolts up german spec (goudntight) and I have never had an issue.
