  • Coolant hose exploded!

I had a coolant hose explode on me today, making a big mess in the parking lot. It happened just as my girlfriend and her co-workers were leaving their work. And here I am in front of their door, with coolant all over their parking. Not my best impression.

I figured out it was one of the hoses going to the back of the EGR cooler. I replaced the hose with a Fuel rated tube (only tube I could find with the right inner diameter) and topped my coolant tank up with some VW Coolant.

I tested for leaks and physically, everything looks fine.

I started the car but my Coolant Light keeps blinking now.

I checked the reservoir and the level looks good. I also kept a close eye on my temperature gauge while I drove home (45 min) but it stayed just below the 90 mark.

I was told I might have air in the coolant system and that it was going to be a big hassle to get it out.

Any advice on what might be wrong?

Is there coolant in the ball that covers the sensor itself?

      Pictures of hose?

For air i just undo the coolant reservoir and hand pump all the lines up to the top to force air bubbles out.

I refilled the coolant ball and it's topped up to between the Min and Max lines.

I threw the hose out, in the middle it had expanded and become soft, then a hole ripped open the middle.

The coolant line for the EGR comes from the heater core. Might have some air trapped in there. Open the reservoir cap, turn the heat on full defrost and hand pump the lines. The light should only blink if the level sensor is triggered.

Thanks for the quick info, I'll try to do what you've suggested.

I guess I"m lucky this didn't happen half way between Vancouver and Calgary tomorrow!

After letting the car sit overnight, the level settled down, I refilled and now everything's good.

I can't really help you with pictures or a how to, there are dozens of hoses that can be replaced, they all work the same, loosen the clip using pliers, pull the hose off, thread the clips onto the new hose, put the new hose in and re-attach the clips.

I can't believe a hose blew up, don't need a how to, just which hoses to look out for, besides them all.

                      Re: Coolant hose exploded!

In my case it's a hose which passes from the front of the to the rear of the EGR cooler. The reason it failed may be because it sits in a tight spot and oil (or some kind of fluid) may have leaked on it. When I put in my new hose, I made it slightly longer than the stock and I rerouted it to avoid any future reoccurence.

Here is a picture showing what I did.
