  • New to Canada and need to know whats involved in getting a car.

Hi so I'm new here I made it out to the most recent meet. I'm over here from Ireland for the for seeable future.

I'm looking to find out all I need to know for getting a car. Such as what insurance companies are recommended.

    From what I understand. I need to;

    1. register a car but do I have a period of time after I buy it to do it. I know its possible to get custom plates and that they take a few weeks to come through is there a website you can search and see if there is something available that you want.

    2. Get insured if a car is over 10yrs old or out of state it has to be examined by a mechanic I presume an insurance company will list a mechanic but I think the best option would be to have a car examined before buying it and being able to take that report to an insurance company or how is the best way to go about it.

    3. Where would people suggest to look at cars? I have looked around a bit on
    kijiji.ca
    http://www.autotrader.ca
    dubberz.com
    This forum.
Is there an audi forum out there or other specific VW's

I have a love for mk2 golfs (My first car which is in hibernation as I'm calling it is a mk2 with a 1.9 TDI ASZ so the mk4 golf 130bhp which I don't think was available here. It was remapped up to 178bhp and 305 ft/lb. I can find the build thread and post it if people want. I didn't build the car myself I brought it from England to Ireland)

I have come across a website that sells lots of mk2's dubberz.com It seems to have plenty but it is BC mainly. There is a few nice ones. The drive seems like a lot and the added hassle of bring it across province. Anyone have any experience with this??

    Thanks

There is the build thread to my car from a couple of years before I got it. I don't think it can be read as a guest unfortunately

Well you have a bit of time after a purchase for registration if you drive around with a bill of sale, but you need insurance right away. Personal plates take many weeks so if you are after one go to a registry and see what is available and order it asap. I would get the car inspected before the purchase and yes you will need a report for insurance purposes as well.

Good luck in your search and I hope I can find a way to make it to the Edition 38 show this year too!

          Hi,
Coming from Britain myself I can tell you that it is much easier doing everything here in Canada.
But the car, take the bill of sale to a registry, you can buy a personalized plate which will take a couple of weeks to come in the mail and in the meantime they'll give you a temporary plate. you'll need car insurance before you can register it. Call someone like Palmer Salmon insurance and give them the VIN of the car your buying and they can email/fax you an insurance slip within 10 minutes of signing up to your policy.

PM me if you have questions.

F*** No! I had been with Meloche Monex under my parents and on my own for at least 6 years before getting an itch to see what other companies offer. That's when I found MM had been gouging me by more than $1000! I happened to call Intact for a quote and the lady on the other end of the phone actually did the leg work to find out that I should've been classified under a better rating and ended up putting me under 1k/year.

For Sh*ts and giggles I called Meloche back to see what they would quote me at and the guy on the phone still quoted me at nearly $2800! Never again will I go with Meloche.

I pay an entire $400 a year for full coverage on my S4 through them. No one can touch them on price. Although I have a clean abstract and am over 25.

Same here, over 25 with a clean sheet, still wanted to charge me over 2500 for a 2.0 mk4 Jetta, '69 Bug and tenants... I must have been giving the trainee every time but I'm not going to bother with them for a long time.

As long as you keep the BOS with you, you have 2 weeks to get the registration switched over, but you need to have a plate on your car still. They might be able to do some sort of in transit pass though. For insurance, different companies have different rules when it comes to inspections I believe. I work for AMA insurance and we require you to get an inspection if the vehicle is 12 years or older. Although, if you purchase an AMA membership (roughly $100) then we do not require any inspections. We have decent rates but deffinately shop around.

So I can pick up a plate at the registry office? I presume it can't be an open one that I can list with a car once I buy it. Or how do you go about putting on a plate as soon as you drive a car away after buying it?

The VAG scene is pretty big in England they have a good range of engines available not so much on big n/a engines as they are here not to many 2.5 engines. Edition is pretty big as a forum as well as event you'll find lots of pictures and videos for it. There is a good few forums over there ukmkivs.co.uk I'm sure there is a few more just can't think of them. Ireland has had vagdrivers.net but most people are moving from that to a new forum called http://www.autostadt.ie/phpbb3/index.php if you want to take a look.

I don't need to get one right away I can use my Irish one for a year.

I will check AMA out I want to look into their examination of cars. I think I'll get whatever I'm getting checked out.

Is there any reputable mechanics that have a lot to do with this forum??

I'm thinking of getting a VR6 12v of some sort preferable a mk3 GTI 3 door I must put a wanted thread. I am flexible though. I'm just looking for something fun to get me started. with a reasonable amount of poke to it. Love the sound of those engines.
