Lot of engine swaps are possible but only the original engine will just hook right up...

Personally I have always wanted to put a 2.0 8v in a Mk1, I think that would be the best swap. Cheap, easy to find, easy to make run and run well (1.8t is always a *****), 120 hp or so should be fine in a Mk1 and not cause so many problems with other things breaking.

    Think this guy did it:

Do a 2.0 swap, that would be fantastic

On another not the engine from my cabby will be looking for a new home but I likely won't get around to the swap for a couple months.

2.0 aba bottom end with a 1.8 rabbit gti head. hold 8000rpm all day. high lift cam and some port work and it would make for a great little motor.
