Re: Passat TDI Balance Shaft Issue

Are those updated parts or are you going to faced with this issue again down the road?

Updated. They nixed the crappy chain and went to direct gear drive system.

Re: Passat TDI Balance Shaft Issue

Hopefully they get the install right, I have been hearing about bad installs coming to haunt guys 5k-10k km's down the road. One of the gears is not torqued from the factory on the BS module and of course some have forgotten about it and had big issues. If the balance shaft module goes so does the oil pump, turbo engines with no oil is a very bad thing.

This is also the second or third revision of the redesigned part. I will print off Oilhammer's guide for George too I think. Has some good tips in there.

I think George is booking about three weeks out, but that's probably good.. Gets me a paycheck or two between parts and labour!

Also have a feeling once under there, there may be some bushings and mounts that might as well get done at the same time.

Did you look at the balance shaft delete kits on boraparts? Seems like a much cheaper option, for the parts anyways.

Re: Passat TDI Balance Shaft Issue

I did see that. Sounds like deleting has less negative effect than you'd think, although more vibration at higher speeds. I like both high speed and smooth rides I suppose.... If I deleted it and could feel vibrations after it would drive me nuts.

Re: Passat TDI Balance Shaft Issue

I should mention that George at tunedub did this for me for what I figure was a pretty decent price. Significantly less than the 24 hour dealer quote.

Got one more appointment to service transmission and car should be good for quite a while. Knock on wood....

Re: Passat TDI Balance Shaft Issue

I picked up a 2005 Passat Wagon dirt cheap that was in immediate need of a balance shaft removal. I didn't feel like paying all that money for the new balance shaft module, had all the tools to do the job, figured I would give it a shot.

Everything is back together, new engine mounts as well, the car does have 305,000 km's on the clock, but it runs great. I can't compare vibrations from before as I trailered the car home and only drove it around the cul de sac to move it around. At idle there is more vibration, although I need to replace the cv joint on the drivers side. Both axles are oem right now, so its not a Chinese axle issue. Under load it feels like a diesel, it runs great, seems to not have the same lag as I remember from my last passat. No tuning yet, waiting on some new glow plugs before I upgrade to a stage 2 and do the tuning and plug update at the same time.

I have done a delete, its not very difficult and requires a few less tools then the bsm conversion.

Funny, I was just thinking about checking in with your project. Great that it is up and running! The transmission is adaptive. The lag and shift patterns do change a little, say, if one's wife drives the car for a while. The throttle response is still my biggest issue, but I've grown used to it.
