Thought it was the WP that usually fails not the belt... any reason to go with this one? Cost spread? I'd considered one myself (and IE mechanical tensioner) when I had my 1.8t but opted instead for a regular OTS kit instead.

My belt failed last year, teeth came off. Mechanical tensioner is the way to go as well, talk to Chris at Calgary autoworks he can get everything needed for the tensioner.

      Killer price.

They dont strech like OEM belts, which is what you want for using a mechanical tensioner, unless you like checking the tension periodically.

This I've put 15,000km's on since I did my belt and it was still as tight as day one.

Ya, I'm going to order the IE mechanical tensioner too. IE's website is a little dangerous lately though... hopefully I can make it through there relatively unscathed

This belt over the OE item is just for the added insurance as it's much stronger. So you can then choose regular TB change intervals or push them a little further - providing your water pump is up to the task.

Aftermarket retailers are typically charging $100 or more for this belt though.

Id skip on the IE tensioner. Sure, its pretty, but you never see the damn thing. Go to CAW and pick up a simple one cheaper

                  Re: Gates Racing Timing Belt

yup you can simply get a mk2 mechanical tensioner with 4 washers and stud and nut, then re-use your old hydraulic tensioner and just remove the pin and it fits and works fine, just make sure the bearing is still good.

Also can anyone verify this? Last I heard the production of these belts has stopped and only what is in stock with suppliers is whats left? Yes? no?

I'm in for one, wont be too long before I'm doing mine again.

I'm not sure about ongoing production but here's the reply I got...

                      Monty,

We have those in stock. What is your preferred method of shipment? I know most prefer USPS because the taxes are cheaper some reason. We ship UPS as well.

Let me know and I will send you a quote.

                      Thanks again,
                      John
I'll be ordering mine as soon I hear back from John.

What? Didn't you jus do yours? You know they're good for more than 10,000km right?

I've already put 15,000km's on my car in 3 months of driving it champ. Changing it at 80,000km so I don't have to replace my head again. Doesn't hurt to have it laying around as well, never know, maybe someone else will need one?

this is really tempting. The beater has 196,000 on it now, going to need to be done soon.
