  • New wheels. What tires do I need?

So I'm ordering some new wheels within the next week or two, and I need to figure out what tires I need. The wheels are 19x8.5 ET45, so will 225/35R19s work without rubbing? Stock wheels and tires are 225/45R17s on 17x7.5 ET51. I'm probably not going any lower any time soon, so I'm thinking that they'll be fine.

I'm also curious to see what kind of tires everyone recommends... I'd like some performance all-seasons or summer tires, but I don't want to spend a ton. I'd like to stay below $200/tire or so.

    On 8.5 I would do a 215/40, but I like my stretch.

Give urbanx a call and see what they can do for you, my last set of tires were 18" Achilles from there and they were mounted and balanced for ~$750.

This link has been invaluable to me: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Try to keep the rolling diameter close to your OEM wheels. You can play with the width and sidewall height to achieve the desired look youre going for. tyrestretch.com has loads of photos with different tire setups to look through

For $250/tire delivered I can't more heartily recommend Dunlop Direzza Sport Star Specs.

They're up to temperature about the time you get around the corner and are unbelievable in the rain. From what I understand, some race teams use them as wet tires for the track.

Otherwise I really liked my Potenza RE050A Pole Positions, if you're looking for the next tier down.

Another tire size calculator I've found useful:

I used to use that one until they added the stupid security code to put in every time. Gets annoying

I had 225/35/19s on my wheels that were that exact spec on my MK6. It was pretty good but once you start getting the car down pretty low it will rub, looking back I would have probably looked at 215s to help with the rubbing. It will depend how low you go but since those coils you have are the ones I had on when I rubbed I would go for 215s!

Well that certainly made my job easier! Thanks for all the help guys! I think I like the look of the 215/35s. And Blair, there's a reason why the specs are exactly the same

I have nothing but good things to say about Hankook Ventus V12's. Also heard alot of good reviews from others about these tires. Price is pretty good too!

Much of the Mk5 .:R forum on the 'Tex will rave about Michelin Pilot Super Sports, but they are way above your suggested price range. I just went with summer Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2s to replace my "all-season" Pirelli P-Zero Neros (which were anything but), these were just a squeak under $200USD each at Tirerack. I use stock 225/40R18s on both summer and winter tires.

TireRack also has a detailed information page about the hows and whys of wheel plus-sizing.

                            They rave over pilots? REALLY?

I had them on my jetta last summer and they were THE LOUDEST TIRES I HAVE EVER HEARD.
they did grip really well though... the 30-60km roar coming from them was obnoxious though.

215/35 is for sure the way to go. thats what i'm running on my 19x8.5

imo its not a crazy stretch. so far digging the federal 595's and they were $735 for the set.
