  • interesting thoughts about Vagcom and keyfobs

well im at work right now, and i just got thinking. i have an aftermarket remote starter installed in my golf and am wondering if it would be possible to program the 3button switchblade key fob's panic button or the pop tunk button to remote start my car with the default 15 minute timer (i do not have an alarm or electric hatch installed on my car). it would be nice to not thave to carry around the aftermarket key fob and also the valet key scratching my leg through my pants all the time.

ive heared wonderful things can be done with vagcom; like rolling down windows/sunroof with the fob, and other nifty things. i just think this could be a possibility. anyone experienced with vagcom?

To your question, the answer is very likely no. I don't see anyone putting R&D money into one car model from one car brand to interface their products. You would have to add a feature to which it was not designed to do so you would have to backwards engineer it then rewrite it all and somehow install that into the system without screwing that system up. Now if you wanted to hack up a aftermarket key fob to look like an OEM one that would be more along the lines that a manufacture would do.

I agree. The VCDS software is really only for modifying parameters and settings that already exist on the CAN-BUS, many of which are just enabled or disabled for various models or markets, like a cellphone sold by Rogers vs. AT&T- they may be the same hardware but each has different features allowed or activated. You can enable or disable daytime running lights, or enable windows and sunroof activation via the keyfob, but you can't start the ignition which is bypassing the immobilizer- something the aftermarket receiver does on a VAG vehicle with the valet key. You need something to trigger that receiver which is proprietary to the remote start manufacturer, just like the VAG keyfob transmitter is proprietary to our vehicles: different frequencies, different encoding.

-and let's not even start on aftermarket stereos with the VAG steering wheel controls..
