  • Diesel ALH timingéfuel woes

So I have been out of town for about a month, so my car sat untouched for a month. Come home, it started a bit rough, but it started. Noticed the last couple of days, it starts harder, and has been getting louder and louder and rougher in the low RPM`s.

Once I break 2,200 rpm, all seems to be well.

But it knocks and throttle response is weird. For instance going down a hill, foot off the gas, engine braking. I go to accelerate, big lag time, which results in a large puff of diesel smoke out the back.

Then when I got home tonight, I shut it off, went in and got my laptop. It was a bastard to start again. Got the codes, and it is showing 17656/P1248/004680 - Start of Injection Timing Regulation: Control Deviation

Checked the ROSStech wiki. Going to buy the full version of the software tonight, and hopefully get the timing read tomorrow, see what is going on. But any idea what could cause this? I don't remember it being weird before I left.

Could the delay in time, cause it to settle? I left it with just under a half tank. Maybe precip?Any other suggestions?

****! That was what my gut went to.

Trying to purchase the Ross-Tech license so I can read the timing, and after some more reading today, going to double check the N108. Could it be the filter? As it could have gotten clogged, but when at the higher RPM's, it will have higher suction to overcome the blockage?

It just seems strange that is happened suddenly, just over the course a few days. That fact that it would start on a warm engine seems odd to me, tells me it just isn't getting any fuel at all, until the rpm's are high enough to draw enough vacuum on the fuel system.

See if I can get my hands on a IP locally.

in all my years of working on these cars i have never seen a clogged fuel filter make a car not start ........ i have seen a bad seal on the fuel t cause bad starting . i have seen many more fuel pumps fail ... run some clean hoses to a clear bottle full of clean fuel and plumb them direct into the pump . get the car running and see how much air is getting pumped into the bottle . after a min or so there should be practically none . if it is bubbling like a fish tank you probably have a bad shaft seals on the pump .

          Will give that whirl.

Super lame, looks like all that OT I racked up, out in the woods just got eaten up.

Any idea why it changes, when I get into a higher rpm?

Tonight when I a vag-com it, if the pump is totally pooched the timing should be pinned at 225, right?

So, Rosstech came through, got my copy of VCDS and the TDI timing graph software.

The yellow line apex, is off the chart. But at the bottom where it says timing. It ranges from 130-230 all over the map. . Likes to live around 180-200.

The graph also says that the engine isn't warm enough. Yet it is at 80.1 Degrees C according to the measuring block 002.

Pulled my car around back, took off the timing belt cover, and the belt didn't appear to be super tight. Took a look at the tensioner, and it has come loose from its little holder slot. So I assume the pump has skipped a tooth.

Don't have my tools up here in Edmonton. So I gotta get it towed to a shop. Lame.
