    Re: 1993 Cabby

Don't get me wrong, if I was in Calgary, I would look at driving it year round, however in Yellowknife, NWT, the winters are a little more harsh and I'd hate to beat up on it. I've drive a convertible here in the winter and trust me, it wasn't much fun

I drove one in the winter before... to be honest not the best winter car I've had, and it did break the car down pretty bad over about 2 seasons.

If you're calling BS to me about driving it in the winter. Yellowknife is a big rock, with -25 (and quite a bit lower) for weeks at a time, but mainly, they used to use blasted granite to "sand" the roads which beat the CRAP out of your vehicle. OP could probably comment better, it's been a few years since I've been there though.

I drove 2 different Mk1's for several winters and yes they did fine, but that's Calgary/Edmonton. Yellowknife is very different climate. My comment was it would be a shame to watch a super clean car get torn apart by the harsh winters there even though I'm sure it would be fine to drive.

i've been in Yellowknife for 16 years and the aggregate put down on the roads ranges from coarse to super coarse (tire damaging). Tuna is correct.
I stopped driving two wheel drive vehicles here in Yellowknife in 2001. I had a 1998 GTI that went through a set of tires the first winter I had it in 1998

on another item with this cabby, thoughts on the timing belt needing to be done? my brother spoke with the seller last night, and the timing belt has not been done yet with one of the pullys either being seized or damaged. i don't have the mech skills to do this myself, but do have a call in to a mechanic friend. Just wondering on time and/or cost?

I was more along the lines thinking it was a fine winter car for calgary. I am fully aware that yellowknife is a whole other beast. Hell I don't even think it would be a decent summer car up there.
As for the timing belt, since it is already in red deer just take it to Chris at Das Auto Haus. I am sure he would be able to fix the t belt pretty easy. It is just a 1.8 JH (I believe) engine so not a ton to it.

                thanks for that!

Yellowknife is a beautiful place in the summer. While short, starting today, we have 16 hours of daylight and it's +16c. I can drive this car from may until september. a great life for a convertible =)
