  • Certification / Change of Ownership

    Hi Guys,

A few of you saw my post in the Members Ride Gallery

I'm moving from Toronto to Calgary, leaving on friday, should be there on monday. I have 90 days to get my ownership changed over from my dad to me (ontario insurance is nuts, cheaper for him to be owner) and was going to get the car safetied and certified as soon as I get there. Couple questions.

-Should I just take it to crappy tire or are there any other places you'd recommend.
-I've got coilovers on it and no front sway bar, not sure if that'd be a problem
-Are emissions strict? I've got a short ram intake and I'm not sure if it would affect the outcome.
-My tires are shot, rolling on one spare, should I get new tires installed before the safety / cert?

Any help would be great, I live downtown Calgary.

    Thanks!

    The veeks.

Emissions and Alberta don't even belong in the same sentence. I'm pretty sure there are no emission laws here.

You don't need a safety, you need a big ass out of province inspection unfortunately since you are technically buying the car from your dad :( You might want to buy the car and register it in ontario so you don't have to go through the out of province, you might be able to get away with just a safety. Might want to research that first...

Anywho i took my winnipeg car in to Calgary Auto Works and they were great about everything, just tell them up front what slight modifications you have made, they are good about fairly judging whether a car is actually going to pose a risk on the roads compared to CT which will just go by a book with less than knowledgable staff

When I brought up my R32 from the states, I took it to Calgary Auto Works as well. As mentioned, just admit the mods when you book your appointment, and they should be able to tell you if you will absolutely need it.

Re: Certification / Change of Ownership

You will need an out of province inspection they range from about 150-250 depending on where you go. Or you can always check kijiji im sure someone will do it for $50 and a case of beer lol

In my experience the car will need to be pretty well mechanically sound. So if you need brakes, tires, suspension that will all need to be fixed prior

and as others have said no emissions here

Re: Certification / Change of Ownership

You WILL need an Out Of Province inspection. Last car I brought up was our ML320 CDI, I had the OOP done at Integra Tire on Macleod Trail (near Chinook Centre). Many Beyonders have used them as well for OOP's, would go there again.

If your tires are bald I'd definitely count on getting those before getting inspected.

Worst case scenario, you fail the inspection and have like 30 days to get it reinspected at no cost.

So if i switch ownership and everything in ontario, I can just get the safety in Alberta and then I can grab plates and should be good?

Negative. Out of province = out of province.

Oh, I guess I took out of province a bit too literally.

I would be buying new tires before you take on such a long drive......You could save yourself a lot of problems.

Went and grabbed some new tires this morning. Got an alignment and some other stuff checked for free. Emailed Calgary Auto Works and talked to Sam, very nice guy, booked an appt for May 4, he said the sway shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the help guys.

Emissions? whats that? "Alberta, f*ck yeah!"

And as everyone else said, you will need an out of province inspection.

Re: Certification / Change of Ownership

You need a $10 form from the registry before they can do the out of province at the shop. It is really stupid, its just how this province works with bringing a car in.

In terms of finding somebody on kijiji to do an out of province its not that simple. A licensed mechanic can do a safety, but a shop needs a special designation from the province to do out of provinces. When I worked in my little shop the owner was licensed to do these and would get cars from other shops all the time. You need special forms for the out of province that are mailed to shops that are allowed to do them.

In terms of emissions, there are no tests, but you do need a Cat and Muffler installed, although not oem. Intakes are not really a concern and even the sway bar would probably be missed by a tech.
Tires have to be the same all around or an alignment could be deemed necessary, and of course the windshield has to be good.

I did 100's of these back in the day and the most common failure was front end problems, ie ball joints, tie rods, idler/pitman arms, stuff like that. The only other common issue was lights out, but most times you just replaced the bulb(assuming it was just a signal) and added it to the bill.

Good luck with the drive, I have done it many of times, although always with a diesel.
