  • Need quick advice on wheel offsets

It's been so long since I seriously looked at wheels I can't remember about offset numbers. I have a chance to get some cheap 17's (for winter. daily driving, or whatever) and need to know if the following will work....

    17" x 7.5", 45 Offset, 5 x 100

The offset of 45et is what's concerning me. On a 1.5" drop will this rub the outside fender? Cuz 45et just means that the wheel sits 45mm out from the hub correct? SO, if our cars are 35et normally then this would effectively be like putting a 10mm spacer correct? Someone please tell me if I'm interpreting this correctly

I don't know a thing about wheel offsets, but I think you are correct about it sitting 10mm further from the hub. 10mm is not a lot.

i thought the smaller the offset the farther they stick cuz simon's brocks have something crazy like 13 and 9 or is that to make more dish?

That's where my confusion is too. Someone on Vortex said that with a 45et that I would need 12-15mm spacers. I was like Huh!, so my logic is apparently backwards. I dunno.

As I understand it, offset is the distance from the hub face to the centerline and not the rim edge. Therefore you must also condsider the backspace as well in determining a wheel that will fit.

Although, with a 7.5" rim width I think you have a lot of room to play with.

Crap. So how do I figure out the backspace? Most manufacturers don't even show this number.

You can calculate the backsapce from the offset and rim width.

I guess you are worried about the fender clearance so I did some number crunching and I come up with 5.52" between the hub face and the rim edge on the particular wheel you are looking at. I'm not sure what the stock 17's are for comparison tho.

This website goes through the calc.

Whoa, that web site has some serious diagrams and formulas going on

Thanks for crunching those numbers! I guess you're right though, without knowing what our stock wheels are for comparison, it's hard to say if they will fit. Interesting info nonetheless.

Re: Need quick advice on wheel offsets

K, I found out that the stock 17's have 38mm offset (still don't know what the rim width is). Assuming that it is the same (7.5") then you are looking at an increase of 7mm from the hub face to the outer rim edge over stock. If the stock width is 7" then you are looking at an increase of 13.5mm over the stock.

I should just go measure my rim since I've got the stock 17's.

                      That's good info Neil!
With 7mm, or even 13mm out from the hub, these wheels won't be a problem to mount. Especially with only about a 1.5" drop. I'll check tomorrow for confirmation on the fitment. Thanks again for your help

Not even sure who makes them Mike. They're just a cheap wheel in a 17" BBS style pattern that a friend of a friend is selling. Like I said, I thought I could use them for winter, long road trips, and that sort of thing. Something to bag on, but be able to get better handling performance than my stock 15's.

If the offset is 45 then you may need a spacer of 8-10mm to get it closer to the 35 that is more common on these cars. However that being said with drop and stuff if you are unsure it is always best to do a test fit.
