  • Re: Where to get Coilovers installed?

My wheels and tires are on the car. Huge improvement over 15inch stock wheels. I am inclined to go with the 395$ FK Cup Kit (55m FR/ 40mm R). That is about a 2 inch drop front and 1.6 inch drop back. It isn't "slammed". I also think that winter driving won't be much of a problem at this height. Opinions?

Wont necessarily be a "problem" but definitely wont be enjoyable either. 55/40 will be pretty low for daily all year driving without the option of adjustability

I guess I could go with the 40/35 kit. The thing about coils that pushes me away is the need of alignment after every drop/raise.

I've adjusted my coilovers plenty of times, had my alignment checked and never had an alignment issue. You only start to see a problem if you are doing LARGE raises and drops. As for how low you can run in winter, depends what kind of driver you are and where you plan on driving.

Winter I only drive within Calgary basically around the SE, SW. I don't know what to do.

Unfortunately that is a decision only you can make. However I will try to make this decision VERY simple for you. Here is a comparison of what you are after, and Tracy's golf (on a 40/35 cup kit)

Here you have all angles of what a 40/35 cup kit would look like. I think this is more than what you're after

You want coilovers man. everyone that gets a cup kit will always want to go lower and regret not getting coils. they are a very good investment especially if you buy some quality ones (h&r, b&g, etc..). Especially living in calgary, i slam my car in the summer and then raise it a couple inches for the winter, no alignment necessary.

No offense but we are all trying to help him out by giving him options for what he wants. We are not trying to tell him what to do and what is best. PS Welcome to the forums

Man a 40/35 cup kits sure looks like it gives you a nice stance and nice all year around driving height. I have a 20th AE suspension on mine and that kit looks like it is a bit lower. I think with coils that you are going to change all the time you have to get good quality ones that are guaranteed not to seize and you need to have the tools and a garage to be able to change the height all the time. For me when I went coils I never planed to adjust them, I never got to drive the car in the winter as it was written off though but I think it would have been too low. Has anyone even brought up the fact that even with a skid plate you can still take out an oil pan? Stephan managed to crack his even with a skid plate (without one I bet his engine would have been toast).

That's exactly right. Especially on a VR the skidplate rests right against the oilpan, so enough pressure to crack the pan without a skidplate will usually crack it even with a skidplate.

Honestly, everyone always wishes they could go lower. However in reality, looking at it from a functional perspective, we could note be happier with the way the car looks (stance wise) AND performs (winter driving). Please note thought that this is a general opinion, and if we had the choice we would NOT go FK again. I would definitely choose the H&R cup kit at the same height the second time around.
