  • Gonna buy a NVD, worried about coil packs

Hey all, as soon as I sell my current car I'm going to buy either a GTI or Jetta (99-2001), don't really care as long as it's 1.8T or VR6. The only thing I'm worried about is coil packs. What happens when they go, r u stuck at the side of the road?

Whatever I buy SHOULD have warranty but if they go once it's gone how much are they?

Any other problems I should be aware of? I really don't want to go from one problem vehicle to another.

From my experiance with coilpacks (i have had 7 changed), i would make sure that you get either a 2003, or something with a decent amount of the warantee remaining. When they change them they tend to not fail again. They use a new part that is supposed to last longer. They also have an additional 20000km warrantee on the replacement part.

    Hope this helps.

O Yeah, get the 1.8t. You wont regret it.

My golf 1.8T has 40,000 km and 1 coilpack, after it blew I drove to the dealership and it was all good.

30,000 kms so far in my 1.8, and no coilpack failures either. Speaking of coilpacks - what is a coilpack? What purpose does it serve? While I am blisfully coilpack-trouble free, my DV is apparently effed. Pete hooked it up to the VAG(ina) and gave me the bad news. Pete, what were you saying about the 944 DV the other night? Do dealerships use them when replacing DV's under warranty?

I have got 65,000 on my 1.8T GTI(2001) and zero coilpack problems..It seems to me that most ppl with those problems have 2002 models.

I think it is most common in early 2002 cars. Peter, your car is late enough that it should have the new coilpack design

Quite a few of the late 02 and early 03 1.8Ts in Audis and VWs across North America are experiencing ignition coil failures. VWoA has recognized the problem and in November shipped out 15,000 units to North American dealers. There are still some cars down, but they are working diligently at the problem.
