I've got the little spreader tool too. On my mk4, that bolt at the bottom of the strut was pretty badly corroded and I decided to replace it. It's actually a stretch bolt anyways, although most use it a second time. I would have too, except when I pulled it out, it looked rough!.

I too have a spring compress and the special tool to take the top nut off. I need to pick up a new strut spreader since the last user lost it (or left it in the spindle lol) Either way I would be willing to lend it out. I am also in hidden Valley though. Although Stefan and I live a block apart so you could borrow his spreader.
As a hint, do the drivers side first since it is way easier then the passenger side. It will give you a good feel for how it goes. Then when you try to do the passenger side try to coil the spring down around the perch. It will always feel like you are about an inch too short while trying it out. As for the rears, they shouldn't take much more then 10 minutes a side when after you get the tires off.
