  • Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the Cross Coupe concept that has been newly updated with a TDI plug-in hybrid powertrain. They have also taken the opportunity to reveal a few more of the technical details to show the versatility of the VW Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform that under pins the concept. The same platform is used on the new Audi A3 and will also be used for upcoming models such as the VW Golf VII.

The new powertrain is the focal point of the upgraded concept. It comprises of a 2.0-liter turbodiesel direct-injection engine (TDI) that has been coupled with two electric motors. It results in a fuel economy figure of just 1.8 liters/km and CO2 emissions of just 46 g/km (130 mpg US /156 mpg UK) as well as performance figures that measure up well against other models.

The SUV has a combined output of 306 PS (225 kW / 302 hp) and 700 Nm of torque, it can accelerate from 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) in 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 220 kph (137 mph).

Will the Cross Coupe Concept make it to production? There are no confirmations yet, but it seems highly likely we will see the powertrain in cars such as the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf.

The more I read about this modular platform they are rolling out across all their brands the more ingenious it sounds. "Hey lets make as many cars as we can with as little difference in components as we can" and the rest of the industry went "doh".
