  • 12v VR6 Misfire. Have Questions!

    Hey guys,

I have an MK4 jetta (12v VR6) and while i was driving today, my car misfired on cylinders 4 & 6. When i felt the car start to drive like crap, my CEL came on and started to flash. I remember being told that if the CEL starts flashing, pull over and turn the car of right away. I pulled into a gas station and turned the car off right away.

After 15 min, I turned the car back on and had a solid CEL on. The car felt fine and didn't drive poor at all. I got the car scanned and got the misfire codes for the 2 cylinders. After that, I cleared the codes and it seems to be working no problem now.

I went to Northland VW to ask the service techs some question and they said that the coilpack and the wires would need to get replaced.

I was doing some research on the VR6 motor and what the problem could be with a misfire and it turns out that their was a recall on specific cars with the coilpack issue. Turns out it's not just the VR6 motor that has this issue. A lot of the motors between 2001-2007 are effected.

    Here's my question!

Does anyone know the recall number? I called Northland VW and left a message with them to get a response back on whether or not my car's going to be covered under the recall. Just want to get my information straight when i talk to them. Thanks everyone.

I have never heard of a VR6 coilpack recall. There was a 1.8t individual ignition coil recall that happened about a year and a half ago, not sure if it is still in effect though.

12V's don't have individual coil packs, they have an ignition coil which drives all the spark plugs. They are prone to cracking and bloody expensive to replace ($150+). Likely the problem was some water on the ignition coil housing causing it to short.
      Personally I went with this:

I should point out I got everything at pic n pull cheap cheap lol
I also believe there is no recall for that part, only for the 1.8t coil packs is all I have ever heard of.

I haven't sold to many coil packs for that car

I would start with the plugs. What sort of KM's are on the car? When was the last time the spark plugs were replaced? I would pull one out just to double check the condition

Another thing you can try is take a spritzer bottle and mist the coil pack see if it causes an issue can also check the wires this way to or can check with a screw driver and see if the wires arc against it

The plugs were replaced about 6 months ago. So they have about 10,000 km's on them. I'm gonna pull them and see what's going on there. Will have an update hopefully soon. The car has 240,000 kms on it. I was reading about the spritzer bottle test and i'm gonna give it a shot when i get some time this week. Might have to let the car sit for a few day :(. Speaking of which, Natty could you PM me pricing for a new ignition coil and wires? Thanks in advance.

                Hah vr6 misfires eh.

Check wires, obviously, and also check your crank position sensor. sometimes it collects water in wire connector, causing misfires
