Question RE: Dealership Service

Hey All,

So, as my Dub begins to creep towards its first oil change, I begin to wonder: "Is it worth it to get dealership service (ie. oil changes) or is it just a complete waste of money?" I do realize that getting my services done at the dealership will cost more however, I probably only put about 8,000km a year on my Dub. Would you recommend getting an annual service done at the VW dealership or is this process just a complete "money grab"?

Sorry if this topic has been posted before. I thought I would give everyone a fresh new opportunity to praise or flame their recent experiences.

I would get my car serviced at the dealer during the warranty period, just to reduce any issues that could arise if you had to make a claim.

well you seriously get raped by them on the oil changes.. northland charges me 80 somethign bucks for a syn. change which is a complete waste of money when i can do it myself with the same stuff for like 50

but also you have to look at your maintenance schedule.. after a 16k change its every 16k for a change (yea right!) so i'm taking mine in at 24 for another change.. i think after this one the odd (non mentioned) intervals i'll do it myself but i might be lazy and just bend over

I agree with Canadian Turbo on this one. Going to the dealership to get oil changes and service during the warranty period will save future troubles should something go wrong. There's a lot of sob stories on the vortex about people being denied warranty 'cause they didn't get service done by the dealer. They're just looking for a way to not cover your car.

yea go for the set scheduled ones but like i said the odd ones on those huge change gaps i would do it myself..

I think the other end of the disscussion is at sale time too. A dealer serviced car looks REALLY good to prospective buyers. Who knows an extra 30-40 bucks here and there could mean thousands extra when it comes to sell (especially since your car will also have loooooooow mileage). But that's just my opinion.

I change my oil every 4000km regardless, scheduled ones get done at the dealer, extra ones get done by me.

mike does your oil even change color then? cuz even after 8k mine isn't dirty but i still think every 5 would be better

I just do it at those intervals on the advice of my tech

Mileage isn't really that important (unless you are driving a ton, or lots of short cold driving). Just make sure you change it every 6 months (synthetic or not) and you'll be fine, even if you go a few thousand kms over or under.

I do mine in Oct/May regardless of miles. (New oil for the winter months).

If I understand it correct, as long as the oil has been changed (receipts!) then they cannot touch warranty...So even a Mr.Lube change, which does do warranty friendly oilchanges, is cheaper at 45 bux, and you get a receipt with your Km and date and stuff....I'll still change mine myself, and just keep purchase receipts...
