Where to get brake pads done?

I killed my rear pads, gotta get em replaced. I think I want Mintex Red Box pads.

Can anyone recommend who can do this for me? I would rather avoid the dealership or C1 and just go to a brake shop that sells Mintex.

I was quoted about $170 for rear pads at magic auto on barlow in the NE but I am not sure what make of pads those where. I might just do the rears myself but I have to check to see if my rotors need turning.

Do them yourself its super easy.... Just got to find somewhere warm if i remember right

I've taken off me rear brakes before, shouldn't be a huge problem.

hrmm.. i'm sure somebody can put you up in a garage for an afternoon.. mine isn't the hugest so so i have troubles working on my car sometimes..

I have some huge bays at work that I have accesses to right now as they are being rented out. THey are big enough to fit about 3 motor homes in so do that math lol I am actually building my stereo over there right now so I think I might get my brakes done afterwards and if anyone wants to join me let me know. I do know we need a tool to push and rotate the rear calipers back in but I am unsure if we can rent that anywhere in town. I am not sure weather I need to machine my rotors as if that is the case it will be easier to get someone else to do it all at once. Hmm I need an oil change too lol soo much work..

Doing the brakes definitely isn't very difficult. I helped a buddy of mine out here do his -- we swapped rotors and pads on all 4 corners, along with replacing the brake fluid (including all the glorious bleeding). We also painted his calipers a nice black Neither of us have ever done a full brake job before (I've done the fronts on my old cars, but that's on 20-year old vintage rotors )

You will NEED the brake tool to compress the rear caliper piston. You gotta push it it while rotating it -- I can't imagine doing it without the tool. You can get the tool at parts source (that's where I got mine):

It just goes onto the end of your ratchet.

Honest, it's a pretty easy job. Nothing wrong with getting a brake shop to do it though -- it'll only cost you an hour (or 2 hours, if they're watching porn at the same time as doing your brakes) worth of labour.

Thanks for the hint about the tool Flanders, I will definatly do it myself now, maybe I will even take the rotors in and get them machined. So if anyone wants to do a brake day let me know and we can set something up. Having 2 cars will make getting machine done a lot easier lol. I think places like parts source will machine rotors. Any advice on painting calipers and where to buy pads?

One more thing with the brake tool -- it's basically a little 'cube' with some notches sticking out of the sides of it (you can see one of the notches in the above picture, which slides into the caliper piston). You might need to take your grinder to it, and shave down the corner a little wee bit, to make it fit nicely into your VW's brakes.

And for paint -- TREMCLAD!! Clean off the brakes as much as you can (yay brake cleaner) and then with a little brush (we used a little sponge-on-a-stick) go wild. I put about 4 coats on each caliper...and it looks great. You can pay for the "brake caliper paint" if you want too, but there's no need. Tremclad rust-paint does the trick, and it's hella-cheap!
