  • Grounding Kit

Hey so anyone try this yet. I know dale did but he don't reply to me haha just joking dale.
the vortex DIY shows all the points, etc in the 1.8T forum so its super easy to do. .takes 1 hour with making the wires yourself. costs like oh 50 bucks or less to do also. I think Revy? or Home Depot would carry 8 or 4guage wire hey? i'm gonna try this and see if it does anything..

    Re: Grounding Kit

    I did it.
Can't say it did anything bad! Didn't notice any power gains, but this really wasn't my goal. I've had grounding problems in my previous vehicles, so this is more preventative maintenance for me! I could say things are "smoother" but I really have no idea. I did notice that my headlights don't dim as much when I hit the brakes, and my radio reception is much much much cleaner though!

Definately go 8 or 12 gauge - 4 is massive overkill (I read the whole thread

I'm gonna do it in the spring - it's one of those things that can't hurt.

I work at Rona (I hate the new name, Revy was way better!) and yes we do have 8 and 12 gauge wire.

You are not supposed to use just any old 4/8 gauge wire (tho I'm suspect it's fine) - the thread specifically mentioned 100% copper stereo grounding wire which you get at soundsaround etc. I dunno - can try the higher end home depot/rona stuff?

              Re: Grounding Kit

I have bought spools of 8 and 12 guage wire at either Princess Auto and MRO electronics, and both were cheaper than Home Depot or Revy.

Use HIGH END wire this is all supposed to be about better current not just wire in the hood....

okay well i finished last night with the help of mike's bendy ratchet so all the points are on... idle seems very stable but i'll report back on some of this after more driving dunno about power either as i want to drive more but for the 60 bucks i spent can't complain..

okay well after a week of driving here are my impressions.. no idea on the power my car seems really zippy lately but that might be the cold air.
as for the idle.. NO MORE DIPPY BULLSHIZ!!! idle stays at like 780 solid no matter how much gas is in my tank.. went to pretty much 1L left tonight and idle never went down once so just for that fact i'm glad i did this mod..

I'm gonna do this mod with 8 gauge wire very soon I think. Ryan - what size end hooks did you use? And did you do the tranny point?

yea geoff i did that exact 1st page guide.. the tranny ground was a pita to get but its easy.. i ended up buying 8ga from soundsaround and the ends were gold plated ring terminals from them too total cost was like fifty bucks so pretty cheap
one thing though the point near the FPR it says be super careful with the bolt as the spot is easy to break well i was and the damn bolt fell out and my points all came loose so i just went and bought a new bolt from revy and a nut and tightened it up good.. overall it looks pretty good although i have a mix of black/red wire which is kinda ghetto but whatever

Well got mine done tonight. Soundsaround wouldn't sell me wire by the foot at Macleod, so I ended up buying from Visions (tons of extra wire). Connectors are $$$ but the whole thing was 51 bucks.

Took over 3 hours - after hearing how hard the tranny point was I ended up removing something that was 10x harder. After fixing that mistake, the proper tranny point took less than 5 minutes with no bendy socket.

Anyways, after driving around for 30 mins it's I can't say anything about performance (seemed more responsive, but could be placebo). It definately didn't have an idle dip in the time I was driving so that's excellent. 750 rpm idle constant - it only dipped a tiny bit when I turned on the AC.

                              I'm happy with it.
