    Re: Dieselgeek Timing belt kit

You can also turn it over by hand and see if it "hangs up" anywhere or is tough to turn. You should be able to turn it with a socket wrench by hand. Have someone watch the topside while doing it.

I'm debating in my head to take the head off or not, it's going to be a huge job to do right, and everything looks okay. The valves look good and seat properly, I turned it over by hand and everything moves smoothly.

I can guarantee that valves are bent. There is no way to tell if they are seating properly or if there is any damage with the head still installed. Its an interference engine. It turns over easily because they bent into a position that allows the pistons to travel through there full stroke.

If you dont want to pull the head just yet, install the new timing belt, time it properly, and crank it over and see. You might get lucky, but i doubt it. Sorry to sound like a pessimist, but i have yet to see any vw diesel thats missing teeth on a timing belt due to a failed water pump make it out without any damage to the valves.

How did you see the valves without taking the head off?

Just for info considering I saw a Kijiji ad pop up for a head for a bew. A brand new head with valves, springs, and a new cam shaft will easily run you $2400-2500 in town. Maybe a little cheaper depending on the markup, but it gives you an idea.

If you order from south of the border its a bit cheaper, $1900 from what I see. Also mentioned here there is two versions, so make sure you get the right one if you go used.

Agree with everyone here, valves will be bent, no way of telling without the head off, unless you do a compression test after re-abssembling everything.

                Re: Dieselgeek Timing belt kit

Don't forget with a used engine there is still the common cam shaft wear problem that is not a question of if, more of when. Buying used could mean you are also getting a head that you will have to do this in the future. Best I could see a stock kit with everything is around $700, and an upgraded kit is closer to $1200. You still have to install everything and of course the down time when doing the Cam. I looked in the car part, a head with a cam was $700 + shipping, the count a cam shaft you are pretty close to new. Keep in mind used engines by the looks of things can be had with 150k km's for $1500-3000.

I'm working on sourcing a used Colt cam and a head. I'll throw the timing belt on as it is anyway and test it Thursday. If it works, superb I'll still get the colt cam, if not, I'll get a head and the cam.

Bought a head in great condition with 86k km, being imported from Vancouver. Should arrive in the next two days. Bought a headgasket, intake gasket and still waiting on the colt cam. I may just go ahead and skip the colt cam if I can't get my hands on it soon enough.

Yeah, I got headbolts too but I forgot to list those. I didn't even bother to do a detailed examination, it looked fine but I'm no expert so I bought another one to be safe. I want to be able to drive the car for a while to come.

I may just skip the colt cam this time depending how long it will take to arrive from PO.

Colt Cam is taking too long. So here's the head reassembled with the new turbo and ready to go back onto the block.

Click the picture to see all 3 - sorry for the phone pics.

Hopefully it all works out. I would put the turbo on after you bolt the head down. Hope you got a good torque wrench and follow the Bently instructions very closely when torquing the head bolts. Any extra weight to the head aka, turbo or intake on it while torquing the head bolts will probably **** with your torquing.

I doubt that. Its mated to a flat surface and the torque spec is so much greater than any force that the turbo will apply hanging off the head
