Dieselgeek Timing belt kit

My TDI is in need of a timing belt change before it will be able to start again.
After some research I decided to go with the dieselgeek kit because of the water pump removal tool.

Today I got the notice that my package has arrived.


This will be my first timing belt so it's going to be a bit of a learning experience at the same time.

So far the cost is about $300 with $20 import duties for the timing belt kit.

Hopefully there aren't any other issues that suddenly come up. But that, I will find out once it's been done.

I'm hoping to get it done over the next weekend but it's not sure yet, one of my friends has an indoor heated garage which I may be able to borrow for a few days to do this, still waiting on confirmation though.

Very excited to get the ball rolling on this, been waiting a while to get the timing belt kit.

Nice - I did my 1.8T and it wasn't bad… not sure how the TDI is. Actually, the first turn of the ignition was was a little nerve-racking

X2...what CGDoig said...from what I've read...just make sure that the tensioner is put on correctly...or TOOF goes your head.

Water pump tool is likely not needed, I never needed it. I hope you have the tdi tool kit as you will for sure need it.

Just turn the crank by ratchet first after you are done. Make sure it does two complete rotations and you should be ok. At least, that was the tip my bro gave me and he's done like 10 of these for TDI's. Of which none of blown up yet.

Opening the box it's all smaller than I thought it would be.

Everything looks good, checked the water pump for smoothness, looked at all the parts (seems the 3 belly pans screws are no longer included)
Jim even added the EGR seal for free (though it looks defective?)

When I take it apart and before putting the belt on, I have heard I need to check to make sure the cam and bearings are not worn out. Is this right?

Yes, the PD engines cam and bearings are prone to early wear if the incorrect oil was used even once, or extended periods of non changes. Make sure they're still smooth and show no signs of wear.

Like was mentioned I have done many ALH's, only one PD engine though which was the wifes Passat.

As much as the water pump might not be done I would do it as more preventive maintenance then anything. I would pull the pump to check the bearing and by then you might as well put the new one in. Better to do it with everything out, then to have to pull everything apart again just because you didn't want to do it. I just did a timing belt on my bro's golf with 500,000+ km's that had a plastic water pump in it which made us glad we had the new water pump ready.

The tools that I use on these are the pretty basic ones.

Cam lock, cam holder, cam pulley separator are pretty much what I use on PD's. I don't use the crank lock ever because it never has really moved and so I never bothered with it.

The job basically is more work getting to the timing belt and putting everything back together then actually doing the belt. Although as mentioned, on your first time that first crank with the new belt can get the heart pumping.

Got the garage, finally! Got the car in this saturday, took off the timing belt, serpentine and etc... and...
I found out why the timing was off.
Looks the waterpump had a massive failure, it broke apart, jammed inside, and it stripped 14 teeth!!

This weekend I'm going to pull off the head and see if there's damage inside, but by the feel of it, it's turning fine. I'll also look at issues with the turbo.

Now it would be good to get a manual to put the timing belt back on, lol.

I'm therefore looking for a Hanyes or Bentley manual and also used stock headlights for the Jetta, my left one the plastic is cracked.

From experience, it might be turning freely now, but thats cause it may have already clearanced the valves for itself. I bet the turbo is fine.

If you need a head and can't find one let me know, I should be able to find one for you for a reasonable price.

Don't even bother with the Hanyes. Get a Bentley or you will regret it.

Exactly, Haynes is pointless thats why i gave the link to the Bentley.
