  • 1990 jetta build thread

I thought I would post this up here. I dont have too many pictures from the start but I am going to start documenting it a bit more from this point on. I bought the car in April for 450 bucks. It ran but had close to 300,000 km's. It had not been maintained very well (no service records/it ran like ****). I knew an engine swap was going to happen so I just left the engine alone and bought some coilovers. Next I got to work on fixing the rust where I could and ended up leaving it in primer. I got busy with moving and it sat for a while. Fast forward to July/August and Sean was parting out his 2003 jetta. Right away I told him that I would take the engine along with a few other pieces.

This is what the car looked like when I picked it up:

Chopped the springs while waiting for coilovers:

    They finally came!

    Rust fixed and primered:

    The tear down begins:

Picked up a set of RM's a while back:

    Other random shots:

Fast forward again to last week:

I bought a bench seat instead of the bucket seats. The bench fits the style of the car much better. I also put the new wheels on to see what they look like and I think I'm gonna need some bigger lips.... I have got to get the front down too as it's way higher than the back. The MK4 dash is gone, same thing with it as the seats. I started building my own dash out of sheet metal instead. Finally I didn't like the black so I bought some paint to try today and I think this is it. Centers on the wheels are going to be creme/off white

Lookin good Martin. That bench seat is awesome, I'm dreaming of doing a swap too. Not sure what route I'm going to go yet though. Hope to see some killer progress over winter!

I think the mk4 dash looks sweet in a mk2. So you are sticking with the stock 020 trans? I would look into doing some internal upgrades on it unless you like changing transmissions all the time. I might start my 2L with a 02j swap sometime this winter. http://www.funksoulkitty.org/ Has lots of good info.

thanks for the link. yeah im staying with the 020 for now. i know they cant handle very much power but im going to tune the engine back significantly until i upgrade the trans. i just need to get it running first. im trying to finish all of the things that will be hard to do once the engine is in.

Wow, incredible project. I had an old 89 jetta that looked identical to that one (before mods) love what you're doing with it.
