Well I need to decide 1.8t or vr6. The general consences at vwvortex is that the vr has alot of problems and a few guys said they would never buy another vw again. So has anyone here had any probs with the mk 4 vr's. Aloso they mentioned tranny problems with grinding any insight would be apriciated.

Re: I need to decide
I dunno about the grinding, some people get it some people don't, the VR6/1.8T the consensus on vortex is to drive both and then decide. Also the 1.8T is more readily moddable if your going that way.Nick

Re: I need to decide
I love my 24v, and wouldn't even consider the 1.8t I have had 0 problems with it. And nothing beats the sound of a VR6 with an exhaust.Last edited by Mr. Burns; 12-17-2003, 08:41 AM.

Re: I need to decide
yea mike your 24v sounds so friggin mean with that brullen.. actually once i drove the 1.8T i was sold instantly. i wanted to test a GLI but they only had 1 on the lot at the time and I knew I wouldn't be able to barter as well as my 1.8T as they had like 15 of them.. i'm happy with my choice other than the seats

I also agree with the rest of the guys here. The VR6 has a different feel to it than the turbo 1.8T. If you like to mod your car and enjoy the "whoosh" of a turbo... go with the 1.8T. Otherwise, if you prefer an extra 2 cylinders and a non-turbo engine... go with the VR6. My first dub driving experience was a '97 Driver's edition GTi (VR6). Now, i own a 20th Anny with the 1.8T. Personally, i love both cars. Argueably, the VR6 maybe a little more reliable... however, after seeing some modded and chipped 1.8T's... I can't wait to smoke buddie in his Camaro on Deerfoot in the near future!

Re: I need to decide
They are both good engines.
The weight of the VR6 also affects handling. If you plan to lower the car, many people prefer the aftermarket 1.8T kits again this is likely because it is easier to build a good kit to handle less weight.
Drive them and then decide.KR

Re: I need to decide
I don't think the consensus on the 'tex is that VR6's aren't reliable. In fact I am sure they are ALOT more reliable than the 1.8t's (coilpacks blah blah blah). Drive both cars and then chose.Paul
